Hi, I had a hen get progressively paralyzed over the course of three or four days and then die. Any idea what caused it? She first started out sitting down and limping a little. The next day she seemed to not be able to stand though she could make her way around a little. The third day, I think, she couldn't move at all and died. The rest of my flock seems fine. She was 3 years old. Any ideas?

I'm sorry about your hen.
Was it the same one that you asked about in this thread?

It's very hard to know the cause of death unless a necropsy/testing is performed. Sending the body to your state lab would give you the best information.

Limping then leading to paralysis could be quite a few things - Marek's would top the list for sure. Molds, toxins, botulism and reproductive problems (mostly cancer) are a few other things that might also cause some of the symptoms you describe.

Thank you. No, it was a different hen. I did a lead home test on the paint chips they were eating but it didn't show. Still not sure if we should eat the eggs 😬 I think I'll get my daughter a lead blood test soon to see if there is lead. It's strange non of the chickens are affected except the first hen with the eye problem. She is alive and thriving. I know one hen in particular who partook liberally of the house siding pain chips, and she seems fine.
They've also been mostly blocked from the siding. There was one spot which I have now blocked up. Hoping she died of something else.
