Hi everyone,

I have an Isa Brown, a little over 3 years old, who laid a lash egg about 9 months ago. She'd been quite ill from it, but really was only walking funny for the most part. I'd given her echinacea and yarrow for the infection, which my other two chickens got as well, since I added it to their waterer everyday. For the past month or two she started walking normally and has seemed perfectly fine. She hasn't laid any eggs since the lash egg.

Last Wednesday, I took my flock out of their run (I always do this) and watched them for an hour before putting them back. One of my other hens kept going after the Isa Brown. She was pecking her and lunged at her for no reason that I saw. The Isa was acting the way she always does, despite the bullying.

That same evening, I had them out again and noticed the Isa Brown was limping. It looked as though there was something wrong with her right leg.

The next day, Thursday, I checked in on her. She was lying on her right side (the side with the limp) and I believe she'd been like that all morning until I found her. No visible injuries that I could see. I fed her some scrambled eggs, which she ate quickly, but only a few bites. We had to bring her inside the house that evening so my other two chickens could get in the coop to sleep (I was keeping the other two away from the sick one all day).

I've been hand-feeding her since last Thursday. She was only eating a little bit, until two days ago, when she stopped completely. I don't believe she's had any water at all. Since Saturday, I could only get her to eat grapes and blueberries.

She stopped eating completely two days ago, as I've said (that would be Tuesday). Every day she's been getting weaker and this morning when I saw her, I thought she'd be gone by evening.

BUT, here we are exactly one week later. She started drinking her water this afternoon and now she seems to have perked up completely. She's been eating again (I made her scrambled eggs, which she didn't want, so I gave her part of my lunch, which was roast beef and she's been eating that all afternoon).

She's lying on her right side and can't seem to move either leg. The only thing she can move is her head and her left wing. Her toes have been curled this entire time. The right leg (the one this started with) is straight behind her, the left leg is splayed out to the left, along with her wing, which she keeps moving.

What could be wrong with her, and what should I do???

(My other two chickens are perfectly fine.)

Thank you for any help.

She could have Mareks disease, or suffered a spinal injury, but it is hard to know exactly. With salpingitis and lash eggs they can have large masses inside the abdomen which could press on the leg nerves. Can you straighten and flatten her toes in a normal position and tape them flat? I also would start her on some human super B complex 1/2 tablet daily crushed into a small amount of food or egg. A chicken sling chair might be a good way to get her upright for parts of the day and in front of food and water. Here are some links to read on taping her toes flat, B complex tablets, and chicken slings:

Thank you so much for all your suggestions and the links you provided. I think I'm going to run out to Walmart for the vitamins and everything I'll need to make that chicken chair.

My gut tells me this is the salpingitis that's doing this. Do you have any idea how I could get her to be able to walk again? Or do you think the B vitamins will do it?

Thanks again. Your help is very much appreciated.
