paralyzed legs?

About a week and a half ago, I found my BCM on my coop floor, unable to use her legs. I set her in the nest box with food and water to see if she might improve with some hydration. No dice. So, I gave her a shot of B12, and watched her for a few days, placed her on the coop floor with a dish of food and water right infront of her. She still has not improved, but she was not (and still is not) getting worse. I went out of town for a few days, again making sure she had food and water infront of her, and someone to check on her. At this point, with her lack of improvement, I have been considering euthanizing her. I cannot justify keeping a crippled bird around, no matter how much I like her. It just isn't fair.

Apparently my sister had someone watching her dogs, and she came across my girl sitting on the coop floor, and the food and water were used up (I knew there was enough for three days worth of water, and allowed my girls to free range while I was gone incase they ate all of the food I left down). I had a friend checking on them. I had the intention of coming back the fourth day (today) to refill their water. The temps havent been too bad lately, and a few hours without water was not going to hurt them (I also had two additional water sources out for them). Well, my bad luck, my sister's friend went into our back yard, and found my chicken laying next to an empty feeder and waterer. She called me panicked (got my number from an emergency list next to my personal desk, no way she should have been poking around by it) and I told her I would be home in a few hours, to make sure she could get to the water.

She freaked out, and now wants to call animal control on me ( I am an animal services officer certified by my state, by the way. I know the laws). I do not know what else to do for my poor bird, she is showing no improvement, has no new symptoms, and is still in good spirits...she even has somehow managed to move around the coop a little. With her lack of improvement, I have brought her inside, vet wrapped her legs to her body in a bent position, and placed her in a small dog crate. I gave her another shot of B12 tonight, and pedialite in her water.

I thought maybe she dislocated something jumping out of the nest box or something, but appears not to have done so. There also appears to be no fractures in her legs, and no weakness progressing to other parts of her body indicating possible disease. Any thoughts on what else I can try to get some improvement? If animal control is called, I can show provision of reasonable care and treatment (especially since no vets in my area work with chickens), and adequate provision of food and water, but I may have to euthanize my lovely Evie to placate them.

Again, I was considering that option anyway, but I wanted to make sure I gave her every chance to improve. She is a pet that I am very fond of after all.

I just wanted to add it has been more than three months since I have seen any eggs from any of my four chickens. One is a very young EE that should have long since laid her first egg.

Could it be Mareks disease? I know you have taken her to the Vet, but does that Vet specialise in poultry, does he/she know all there is know?

If it is Mareks, and I sincerely hope it isnt, she would really be suffering and need to be euthanised.

Hi. I had found one of my hens the same way. I thought it may have been a heat stroke. She could not stand up. It went on for quite some time but eventually she did start to walk. While she was down I discovered she had lice, lots of them. I still don't understand why only one other hen in the coop had just a few. Anyway, got rid of the lice, kept her in a cage for her protection so she didn't injure herself or get picked on. Fed her scrambled eggs and wet mash along with vitamins. It has taken a long time for her to get her strength back but she walks fine.

My first thought was Mareks too...I looked for a vet, but none would see her. At this point, I do not believe it to be mareks as she has presented no other symptoms, and has not declined any further. Also, the chances of mareks are super slim. My whole flock was vaccinated as chicks.

The weird thing is that I sevin dusted my entire flock just a few days before this. My neighbor said his girls (that he had gotten from me a while back) had gotten mites recently, and because we live so close, I might want to treat mine too. I feared it may have been because of the sevin dust that she became paralyzed, but I do not know why that would happen, or why again she would not have gotten worse by now.

Someone mentioned a multivitamin. Would an iron builder help too? I have a liquid suplement, but it is iron rich, and I am concerned about giving her something with too much iron. I do not know if chickens are iron retaining or not, and I certainly do not want to poison her on top of it. I suppose I can pick up some iron free poly vi sol at the store.

Should I keep her vet wrapped (I did it because she seemed to have difficulty keeping her legs under her, and they kept splaying out). I wrapped a towel in a circle to create a kind of nest for her, and put food and water within beak's reach for her.

It is always heavily stressed do not giv ethem iron. I had two polish chicks (out of 8) start having problems with their legs. They turned out to have a B vitamin deficiency from the chick starter being medicated. I crushed up B complex tablets and put that into the food and gave them a drop or two of liquid baby vitamins (minus iron) in the beak each day. It helped mine.

how long did you give it for? I have been giving her B12 injections since she started showing symptoms.

ETA: I have been injecting intramuscularly, in her leg muscle. She does not seem to feel it, which would re-enforce my belief that she is paralyzed, and not just vitamin deficient.

The first one I had to give it to for a couple weeks before it was recovered as I didn't realize what was wrong. The second one was better in a few days since it was caught early.

Okay, I guess I will give her two weeks, get her a multi-vitamin, and continue with the B12. After that, I guess euthanasia comes back on the table...unless anyone else has something I can try?

Well, today she managed to get the vet wrap off of one of her legs. It appears that she can basically use it. I guess that is good news. I will continue the B12 injections, and I suppose I will continue giving her pedialite. The other leg show more atrophy at this point. I still cannot feel any breaks or dislocations. Any ideas?
