paralyzed legs?

What was the outcome of this? One of my girls has had a paralized leg now for 2 months? The other good leg is now progressing to being paralized too.

Thanks for the reply. Yes she would have been vaccinated for Marek's at the hatchery. She's about 5 yrs old. I'll try vitamins and see if that makes a difference. I feel so bad for her...she's such a sweet bird.

Can you update me as to what happened? My chicken stopped using one leg and was hopping around on the other. 2 days later neither leg works and it looks like she's doing the splits. She had a vaccine for Mareks. I just don't know what to do. I have her in a box with food and water and she is eating and drinking but its not good. I am debating putting her down cuz her quality of life sucks right now. Any chance of recovery? What happened to yours? Thanks

She certainly seems to have symptoms of Mareks, but don't jump to conclusions. Watch her for a few days. Keep her food and water close to her in a crate. There may be something else wrong. Was she vaccinated at a hatchery? Chicks have to be kept free of Mareks infected areas for 2 full weeks for the vaccine to cause immunity.

So is she walking like a penguin or is she walking on her hocks? Egg bound hens can waddle. You should check the inside of her vent for a stuck egg--rubber glove, lubricant, and insert finger 1 1/2 inches into vent. If there is an egg, stick her in a warm bath for 30 minutes, and give her a Tums or calcium tablet, crushed in some egg or yogurt. If she is walking on her hocks, that is something totally different, so post back.

hi thks for reply done what you said tried her vent but didnt seem to be any sign of an egg ,soaked her in warm water for 30-35 mins and now hv her sat up in a small pen in the kitchen with fresh savings not much change though, although she is sitting up cleaning and pruning at herself and looking around as though shes enjoying all the fuss being made, she is eating and drinking well ,she also went too the loo and all seem normal but shes still waddling and if you look at her rear end is pulsating in and out as if she was going to the toilet,by the way ive 2 of these young hens and her sister seems fine and started laying a week or so before her but this ones first egg she laid two days ago is far bigger than her sisters egg and just after noticing it had a double yolk in it ,so dont know if this has anything to do with it ,plus im over here in Ireland and the weather has been very wet by the way but again other 10 hens seem fine, had no calcium tablets so just crushed up an egg shell and put it her food which she seem to eat ,,again only new to this and thks for your reply ..jimmy

When they lay too early or when they lay oversize or double yold eggs, they are more prone to becoming egg bound, and even suffering a prolapsed vent. I'm glad she is enjoying her spa treatment and all of the attention.
