(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We are new to raising chickens on our property, but we have been around chickens throughout our life. We decided to buy some chickens from our local Tractor Supply Store about a year ago and we bought 10 baby chickens which later turned into 35 as we acquired our first incubator.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We have 12 adults and 11 baby chicks with 1 or 2 more baby chicks possibly hatching in a day or 2. We also have 2 dozen Americauna (easter eggers) eggs in the incubator.
(3) What breeds do you have? We have White Leghorns, Black Asian, Golden Laced Wyandotte, leghorn and golden laced wyandotte crossed, Asian and Leghorn crossed, and golden and Asian crossed. We also have 8 assorted breed bantams.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They eat bugs, spread grass seed, and rabbit manure. They are very interesting for the sounds they make and the interactions with the other chickens. The main aspect is collecting the eggs and incubating them for hatching.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We also just started raising rabbits. We plan on growing vegetation for the rabbits and planting a garden for us as well. Going to the livestock auction is a new thing for us. Its very interesting.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Michelle has 3 daughters and I have 2 daughters. We have a small property in the country where we are raising our rabbits and chickens. Mocha is our dog we have and he is sometimes known as the brindle beagle. My daughter has a chihuahua/dachshund mix named Max.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found out about BYC from Pinterest about rabbits and chickens and seen the hatch along ad!
