Well, I am in the decision making stage and find there is so much to learn before diving in. Having looked at all the wooden coop styles and having seen the Eglu by Omlet, I am thinking that the Eglu would be the easiest for my husband and I. We are not much for building at this stage of our lives, having just retired. I am wondering if there are some who have the Eglu. We are only thinking of 3 to 5 chickens. The neighbors are also doing their research and will probably get a larger flock. The town allows it and we both have unusually large plots of land for this town in northern NJ. I'd be interested in visiting anyone in the Bergen County area that already has chickens, especiallly if they have the Eglu. I have friends with farms, but this will be a backyard deal.

Good luck with your chicken adventures! Check out the how to raise chickens forum for more info!

Some of the manufactured units vastly overestimate the number of chickens that can be housed comfortably. Also some buyers have complained that they are not sturdy enough and don't hold up to weather even though they are highly priced.

Rule of thumb holds that you need 4 sq.feet per bird inside the coop and 10 square feet per bird in the outdoor run. Chickens of course can be free ranged if you can accept a number will be taken by predators.

Often coops are available at low cost on Craig's list because people rush into chickens, lose interest and then want to dump the whole thing Sometimes chickens are included.

I have never owned one of these coops. But as Drumstick Diva has mentioned, make sure the birds have enough room to help prevent aggression. Birds turn on each other when they feel cramped. Also, don't use any coops made out of plastic. It sweats easily and the birds will be wet and also get frost bite in the winter.

Oh, and I like your avatar! I used to keep many pairs of Lovebirds and Cockatiels. They have all passed on know except the cranky male in my Avatar. LOL He is 17 years old now. He is sitting on my lap right now insisting on head scratches and then bites me when not done to his liking!
