Partially unhatched chicken - What do do???

Thanks everyone for such a great forum.

I only took the picture to possibly clarify our situation, didn't really think maybe you've all seen similar?

The chick is chirping somewhat intermittently and is moving it's beak and body a bit.

I'll email the pic.

When you dampen the membrane with a little bit of warm water......do you see big veins, or only little ones?

Chicks can hatch between day 19 and 23, most starting on day 21. In the future, it's best left alone till the peeps start to fade.


In the mean time, keep the membrane moist until all the blood as adsorbed into the chick. Wait till you see the chick trying to get out before "helping". If the chick comes out before it is ready, the blood is still under the membrane and the yolk sac can be on the outside of the body. If that sac is not adsorbed, the chick will likely die. From pip to hatch is often up to 24 hours if not sometimes even more.

Chickie is still hanging in there. Am keeping it warm and moist. Heard some chirps a little while ago.

Oh my! Now i'm having more anxiety about my first hatch...which is still only on day 6! Still sitting on my hands. But when I turned one of the eggs it felt sloshy and I was really gentle. Makes nervous. Hope its not going bad! Good luck with your strong little baby!

Almost the exact same thing happened to me! What I did was start to crack open the shell...but there was a bit of blood when i got 1/4 of the way through. I put it back in my makeshift incubator (the clutch was hatched by a broody, who abandoned this chick), and waited for a few hours. When it became obvious that it couldn't hatch by itself i wet it with a warm cloth and started to peel off the shell. I left the membrane on and it got out of that by itself. It is still noticeably less strong than it's siblings but can at least keep up

How is it doing? Have you helped some more? That membrane can get pretty sticky so don't pull it off dry or you'll yank feathers. Always dampen it first.
