Hi, I’ve not hatched any Cochin chicks for over 15 years but, I remember that they were super difficult to sex. Basically I wasn’t sure until they started crowing!!

I’ve hatched these two partridge Cochin recently, they are just over 10 weeks old now. The lighter one is much slower feathering and neither has any tail feathers. My gut feeling is that they are both male but I’d desperately like the darker one to be female! Can anyone help put me out of my misery guessing and looking at them every 2 minutes to see if their combs are any bigger/redder?! Many thanks :)

Are you sure their 10 weeks?! They should be fully feathered out without any baby fluff at 10 weeks. They look like 5 weeks.
that said, The second to last pic shows a cockerel.

Thanks so much for your reply.
Yes they are definitely 10 weeks, I am surprised at how slow they have been to loose their fluff!!
The one you said cockerel is the one I thought was too, any thoughts on the other one (pic 3 I think)?

I just realized you have both of them pictured from the face.
I honestly made my assessment of gender based upon them being younger. A 10 week old cochin cockerel will have the same sized comb and wattles as an adult hen. But these guys are wicked slow to develop, since their still in fluff.
I don't like the color in the comb and wattles, if they were the 5 weeks they appear. If they were 10 weeks, I'd say pullets. With how slow they're being... I don't know.

I'm thinking one cockerel and one pullet. Partridge is a sexually dimorphic color, the males don't have the same pattern as the females. For that reason, the chick getting solid colored feathers on the back and wings is a male. The one that is not is a female.

Yas!! That was what I was hoping to hear. I thought that partridge was a sexually dimorphic colour but was unable to find any examples from my google search. I’ll keep everything crossed that my favourite one is a pullet :)

I agree with Cyprus. My initial thought was that you have a pair of Partridge. It should be more evident as they continue to grow and molt in more of their adult plumage.
