Chirping
Today is our 1st anniversary of our marriage. We are in East Texas Spending the weekend at a local trades day and run across a couple of different folks selling chickens. Picked up a pair of mottled cochins- man said the rooster #1 is 1 year old (husband named him Andy) & hen #2 he said was 1 1/2 years old (I named her Opal). He had a couple of pairs to select from in the cage & these were the two I picked. Both are quite & very calm although Andy wasn't so sure about getting his picture taken!
Andy has a couple of tail feathers missing but there seems to be some pin feathers in there amongst the fluff, so I bet they will grow in. He doesn't have much mottling yet, but at a year old- do you see this as an issue?
Opal laid us an egg yesterday! We will see what she does today! They are not related to each other. What do you think of the match? Any faults? The man stated he used to show cochins & polish. He had some very nice birds. He had already sold all of his polish & we were there at 8am when they opened!
At another booth, a couple were selling show girls & silkies. I'm totally new to show girls.. I had to look them up! They had several to choose from between the ages of 4 to 6 months old & I choose 1 show girl rooster (I think). #3 (Skeeter) I believe to be a silver partridge with some barring, am I correct? They are all not supposed to be related. He has some size to his feet & legs that the others to do not. Much broader as well. There is one little spot of red on one wing. Is he a rooster & what color would you call him? Thoughts on what I would get with mixing him with the three next what I think are pullets? Faults? Things I show be aware of?
#4 (unnamed as of yet) pullet? Black or black/blue? non bearded silkie, 5 toes, pretty blue ear lobes
#5 (unnamed as of yet) pullet? I think she's the youngest of the bunch, she has some black & darker blue flecks amongst her blues, grays, and silvers- correct in calling her a blue splash?
#6 (unnamed as of yet) showgirl, some what like the rooster, but silver partridge with some barring? What color would you call this? Her tips are almost cinnamon chocolate brown with blue silver under, any faults? She is bare nearly to her shoulders with a very small bowtie- would she be considered a 1st or 2nd generation? If I cross #3 Skeeter with her. .. what would you expect to happen?
I was looking for some pullets to hatch other eggs - but I'm not opposed to seeing what we can create with the matches. What if I mixed the Cochin rooster with the show girl or silkie? Which one would you pick? Or perhaps the cochin hen with the show girl rooster ?
Happy Chickening!!
