Partridge Rock & Speckled Sussex breeders

I tried typing yesterday but I couldn't on your post for some reason, but now I'm back.

I personally like the silver laced Wyandotte, they are more striking than the gold laced and the blue laced reds go broody often and mine aren't as friendly as my silver laced.

I haven't had Dominique, too much like boring barred rocks to me, though I like the roosters. I have had any other rock besides the barred ones. No delewares here yet either, I would probably try a Columbian Wyandotte before a Delaware personally.

My welsummers are good all around birds who don't lay much but their eggs are darker. One of my favorite chickens is an 8 year old welsummer who has always followed me around muttering to herself. I also like my blue cochins, getting more this year.

I guess pick them based on coloring. What catches your eye, as well as what is still available. If I could only get 4 I would probably get a Wyandotte, a welsummer, a rock of some color and a Cochin for a good variety.

Anybody know where I can find good quality Partridge Rocks and/or Speckled Sussex?

I was going to order from a hatchery and I probably still will if I can't find any but I was hoping I could maybe find a breeder. They're going to be pets and eggs anyway so show quality, perfect birds doesn't really matter but I wanna guarantee, for instance, the PRs are dark like they're supposed to be.

I think it might be easier if I could find one breeder who breeds both or ships so I don't have to run all over but I'm also possibly interested in Delaware, Welsummer, or Brahma too so if I can't find one eho does everything that's fine.

I was interested in Wyandottes but everything I've read lately seems to suggest they're just mean or have a strong personality.

Anyway, I'm in eastern Massachusetts.

I want to add maybe 2-4 more.

Anyway, thanks a lot

That's okay! And thanks for all the info :)

I personally love my BR but I'm sure I'd love the other colors just as much and you're right, everyone and their grandma has them LOL but I'm also in New England so kinda gotta have one :p

I think mine stands out cause I have mostly orange and black birds :gig

How much is not laying much, out of curiosity? Is at least 2-3 times a week or less or more?

But yeah, that's what I'm thinking for breeds too. Except I'm still wanting to at least try the SS and also now I'm debating on whether I reeeeeaallyyyyy want a broody chicken hahaha I think I do but idk what I'd do with the chicks. Trying to be practical is no fun lol maybe their personality will make up for the broodiness/make me add them anyway? How many eggs do they lay a week? Maybe I could add a partridge Cochin so I could try other breeds instead of another Rock? Or do I add the Rock and forgo (sp?) The Cochin? That's what I'm stuck on atm. Or forgo the SS but I've been wanting to try them since I got these first chickens (they were sold out) and a lot of people really seem to like them, even love. I'm also worried about the feathered feet on the Cochin and their size. Are those usually a problem? Or maybe I should just not narrow it down and add 5 breeds. I could eliminate most of the others but I'm having a really hard time narrowing it down from 5 to 4. I want them all. LOL but I'm really weird and don't want 13 chickens haha

I also would love to add an Ameracauna for those blue blue eggs but they're so expensive :(

Thanks a lot! I checked out her FB and she seems to have nicr birds :)

Go ahead get the speckled Sussex. Cochins will always be there next time.

When I say a breed doesn't lay much it means to me that they lay pretty decent in the spring than stop for most of the summer before laying a few again in the fall before stopping to molt. That's how my welsummer, and my BLRW lay.

Broody hens are a pain to me. They lay for a few weeks than go broody. After breaking them they take about 4-6 weeks to lay again where they lay for another few weeks before going broody again. I'm not a big fan of needing to constantly break hens. I get a lot of them throughout the season.

I have a list of future breeds. It's fun to compile a wish list, which changes constantly. Americana are on that list, I had some years ago before EE became popular, they were pretty.

So sorry, I completely forgot to reply! Haha

Anyway, yeah that's true but next time might not be for years..trying to contain myself... :lau

Wow that doesn't sound like very much :/ but maybe it depends on the chicken? Cause Meyer says like 180 a year which would be like 2 a week? And sone reviews said they're bad layers or noisy/loud or mean. Or lay well in warmer weather but drop to 1-2 in winter if at all. But then other reviews said they're prolific layers and are quiet and calm, etc. So now I just don't know.... I know there will be contrasting opinions on every breed but this one seems really drastically different. Do you think Welsummers are worth it? Even if they're not the greatest layers, I might be willing to put up with it if they have a good personality. We get more than enough eggs from our 8 when they're in full production haha

Hmmmm... that does sound like a pain in the butt haha maybe I'll just add both Wyandotte colors.. although how is the Cochins personality?

Yeah, it's definitely really fun! I have so many breeds and varieties I want. If I had the space and the money I'd have them all.. like for instance, every Rock, Orpington, Australorp, and Wyandotte color.... :lau plus of course lots of other breeds too.

Americauna are definitely pretty! And those blue eggs are beautiful. Maybe I could find one for cheaper. One day ha

No barred Rocks here, just a couple of whites. I don't like barred birds, be it Rocks, Doms or Marans. I did try a couple of cuckoo Marans for their supposed dark eggs. No dark eggs unfortunately.

If you really want to get a Sussex then get one. See what you think of them, not what others say. There's a reason why there are so many breeds of chickens. Something for everyone.

As for Cochins, do you like feathered feet? They do get muddy in spring. Cochins are very laid back but do you want to have to deal with breaking broodies or trying to figure out what do do with extra chicks (especially male chicks?) Other breeds come in partridge - Rocks as you know, and Wyandottes.

If you find out you don't like the breeds you get then you know not to get them again.

Anyway here is our partridge Cochin

But speaking of feathered feet, there's always Faverolles

I would buy from Mt. Healthy hatchery for best hatchry quality. I bought my first Partridge Rocks from them and was very please. Since there closer to you shipping should not be as bad too.

Thanks! I hadn't thought of them, I'll have to look :)

It looks like they only do 10 or more chicks? Is that right? And it looks like per breed rather than 10 total?

If so, I don't think that will really work cause I don't want that many :(
