Partridge Rocks? PICS of my pullet added

My PR hen Zoey sitting on her goose eggs

Her color doesn't look exactly right or as it actually is as she has been sitting a while and she has a fine layer of dust all over her...she gets cranky if I try to brush her off so I just leave her alone...we will fluff and puff her when she is done with her sitting...

I will get a photo of her shortly, it's an ugly, rainy day here so not good for pics. But she is very full feathered and glossy with a small single comb. She is not aggressive at all. In fact this afternoon she was desperate to find an open nest box and my evil cuckoo marans broodies wouldn't let her near a box. I cleared one and had picked her up to put her in the box and her egg popped out right on my feet.

She must have been crowning, poor thing was desperate!

I ordered Partridge Rock chicks from Ideal this year. The 3 I have from my first shipment are definitely the friendliest of the chicks ( the others are Speckled Sussex, Columbian Wyandottes, Ameracaunas, Barnevelders, and a Welsummer). When I cup my hand and lower it into the brooder, the PRs come right over and will step into my hand. They are very calm. I don't see any signs of white on them yet - they are 11 days old now.

Here's a photo of one of them at 2-3 days old:

Very nice looking chick. Unfortunatly the white will not show up till feathers come in. I do know they have at least one decent breeder they buy from so maybe you got lucky. Though from what I have heard there temperments are very good so any chick from them is good to own. Personally I think the more people own and work with this breed even if it is not up to SOP standards the more it will get those interested in breeding to work with PR. It is just so sad the MM has the aggessive lines. So many order from them and then if the buy PR get nasty mean roos and pecky hens. Which gives the breed a bad rep.

Partridge Rocks are a patterned breed. Lockedhearts pic you can see the lacing they are suppose to have and the color. What many are getting from certian hatcheries is no pattern and off colors. There seems to be a variation depending on the breeding to get the PR. Some are the rich bay brown and some are lighter in certain areas the color of orange in the neck. Feet shank and beaks should be a lemon yellow. I have been seeing many PR coming from hatchiers that have white legs or legs with a grey cast. Eyes are to be a reddish bay ideal is a medium RB but sliglty darker or lighter is allowed. It seems tail set is one of the hardest areas for breeders to work on exspecially for the males. Male tails are to be at a 45 degree angle and females 40. The old 1917 standard called for 35 in females but that was changed.

As I said before anyone interesed in breeding any of the Plymouth rocks is lucky for you can read the 1917 standard of their site or you can download to read later. There is alot of good info in that book.

Something I have notice in the past year is there are more people getting into PR for breeding due to the heritage lines being so hard to find. Right now I know of 5 people working with them not including myself. Where is two years there was only 2 maybe 3. So that is an increase. Time will tell how many of us stick with breeding them.

After about five weeks of not knowing - I finally found out today that my mystery chick is a partridge rock. She was in a bin of SLW and polish crested at a swap meet. This was before I really got into chicks, and just grabbed the "cute little brown chick". She's not a perfect partridge rock, she has more gray-ish legs, but I'm just happy to know what she is now!

I've got ten PRs, they're from Ideal. I had to cull or sell most of the 25 for size and other faults - including being too yellow orange, and most the incomplete partridge gene found in hatchery flock - that causes stipling instead of proper pencilling. They are good layers, some are broody. Some carried the proper pg, but not most of them.

I kept the ones that did, the Roo I hope does and am buying SQ eggs to fix color later next year. This year's goal has been size and birds carrying the mahogeny over the orange red. I eliminated the totally stipled birds. I'll watch this group of youngsters and see where I stand.

PR's are a lot harder to find than the other colors. I have some BBS, and some Barreds as well, and now some black/reds from Barred over PR, and PR over Barred. SQ eggs will help finish eliminating those birds that may be carrying the incomplete pg.

I happen to think a good PR is one of the prettiest birds out there. (And lockedhearts needs to send eggs once that trio lays. hint hint...)

As usual nothing will live to breed here if it doesn't have enough common sense and health to survive on seven acres of free ranging.
