By 5 months old you are going to have a very good idea what it's going to be. Cockerels seem to take longer to mature, but pullets are really looking nice by that age. That is when people start showing some of them. They can look really good at 4 months, but 5 is generally the time when they are really getting there. But they will conitnue to mature until they are a year or more. Then their changes are minimal. But people are still showing some birds that are 6 or 7 years old.
The first 4 months seem to drag, but eventually they get there and one morning you just stand there and go WOW... It's all been worth it.
People that have been breeding for years can tell at a much younger age, but for beginners it seems like there is no end to the wait. I'm sorry, I would like to see it go faster, but in many ways that would take the fun out of it....

could be splash partrdge or light blue
i realy like this color
frount line for dog works great for mites
Thank you for the reply. How can you tell a splash partridge? I don't think I've ever seen a photo of one.
I did find out recently about Frontline - after trying almost everything else for months. I put Frontline on all the chickens and within a week - no more mites!

I don't think she would be DQ'd for the beard, just wouldn't do well at shows (I don't think). But she is a beautiful bird. You could possibly get partridge babies from her. Do you know her background at all? Heck, I'd breed her back to blue partridge. Don't know where that beard color came from... Interesting. Maybe someone else will have more of an idea.
Thank you for the info
- I am not planning to show her anyway, her toes aren't super great, but I'm hoping to get some better-toed babies by crossing her with my good-toed boys. I have e-mailed the breeder about the color - and will share what I hear if it's something interesting.
