Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Thank you. I'm still not sure just what color "Frankie" is?? Born a chipmunk, but he gets redder by the day.

Nice babies there, Lisa! I especially love the last pic with the chicks peeking out from under mom!

I can't wait to have some broodies around here!! How are you liking your new place in Georgia, y'all??

ETA: I wasn't laughing at Georgia, just the "y'all" part! Being a transplanted Yankee, I don't think I'll ever get used to "y'all" or "you'ens/we'uns".

LOl... I know but there was a close area by me up north that also used you'ens so I was used to that one but yes I do like it alot here. It is a very pretty area and we got out just in time before that storm hit! I won't miss that!
Thanks, that is Lucy. Lucy, Precious and Charlie all brooded and are raising these chicks together. You should see the ruckus at night as to which mom goes into the nest first. It is so comical!
Please be careful what you wish for! I am all broodied out! I have had every silkie hen but 1 broody more than once this season. Precious did three tours!!! They are nuts! LOL But is is so cute to see them care for the babies and they are great moms.
A storm came up suddenly when we first got here and Precious knew the wind was too strong to take the babies back to the barn safely so she hunkered down over them. I seen her out there and by the time I got there, one of my Favorelle boys was standing over her to help her. It was very cute. I got all in the barn and everyone was OK but that was the sweetest thing I ever saw!

Awww. It's a mazing to me how sweet some of the roos can be. My big Marans roo, Clyde, is used to baby sit the chicks when they first come into the run. He treats them like he does his ladies, shows them treats, calls out when a hawk flies over so they can see danger, and breaks up baby spats that may arise. He will then usher them into the coop at night, then lay in front of the door like a guard dog, keeping the foes out, and the babies in. I hadn't had chickens for some 18 years until 2010, and when I had them way back when, I was working and didn't have the luxuary of watching them. I do now, and they never cease to amaze me! I can't wait until the Silkies form their social structure more. It's also funny how my Marans don't see the Silkies as "chickens". I had a couple of cockerels get in with them (before I fixed the fence), and they just ate and scratched with them like they were just fine. My hens and pullets have always been HUGE bullies towards new chicks, but on older pullet got in with the Silkie flock the other day when I failed to close the gate completely. Same deal, scratching and eating peacefully.

The norm would be jumping on them one by one, and running them off of the food, but there was peace in the valley. It so amazed me, I had to watch it for several minutes. Chickens amaze me, and I think they resemble the human social life more than we realize!

Clyde sounds like such a sweetie! You need to hatch some more babies for him!!!

But by next spring, I bet your silkie girls will be doing that for you. All of my boys are great dads. The favs, silkies and the mixes. The favs are a very gentle breed too. My flock is mixed and I do also have leghorn & NN girls in with the silkies and I have never had a problem even introducing new hens into the flock. I am back up to like 9 or 10 boys now and all get along at this point but the head roo is the oldest silkie boy AJ and he has claimed all the big standard girls as his. He will accept any other boy into his little sub flock but they have to behave. LOL I only have one boy that has it out for me and the is Big Red my partridge roo. He was a sweetheart until I gave him a bath and took him to a show. Now he will sneak up behind be and peck my leg. Rocky my leghorn/silkie boy doesn't like that and will chase him off when he does that to me. The funniest thing was when Red was on a roll with me was when 2 silkie girls Lucy & Lacey proceeded to whoop his butt for acting like a jerk at treat time! They weren't happy with him that day!!! LOL I just love to watch the interactions in the flock. Here at the new place they are close to the house so I can sit on the deck and watch them.
I am glad you got into silkies! I think you will love them. They are so comical sometimes and some are just cuddle bugs! Yours are getting so big and very cute!

he looks blue partrdge
just as a lot red in stead black if u have buffs he could be used in them one generation

Thanks Jesse, that's what I had originally thought, but then the red/buff color kept spreading. He does have blue coloring on his tail and feet, so maybe he will darken some with more age? The only Buff I have here is a pullet, but she will be sold as a pet, due to lacking one toe on one foot. Too bad too, she is quite pretty and has the most comical personality.
