Yes, I only replied to the "recognized" colors in the SOP. I can see the Salmons and Greys showing up here soon! Love these colors, and wish the Greys, who are a recongnized color, would be shown and pictured more! The Salmon color would keep me happy without getting into the Faverolles!

It's getting there. One day at a time. 2 deaths in 2 months in this house is just a little hard to take; especially this time of year. I just had a stranger wake me up by knocking at the door. Wow, a little scary, but being out here in the middle of nowhere I had to let him in to use the phone. It's like 9 degrees outside and his car broke down. Don't worry I had my 3 dogs (the shepherd I told him would eat him - lol) and I had my .38 in the pocket of my robe..... But I had to help the poor guy. There's no cell service here.

Greys are awesome and it's just too bad there aren't but a handful of good grey boys. I'd like to see the blue partridge added. When I came in here to check email and stuff now that I'm somewhat awake, I found my first baby blue partridge dead in the water container. I'm really bummed. Oh well, there should be more on the way.

I got my new Brinsea still air incubator today. It seems really cool. Can't wait to fill her up. It's going to be my hatcher and the new Genesis that I got from Jen will be my incubator. I'm putting one of my old ones away. It's to unreliable any more.

Salmon and cuckoo are recognised varieties. When you add blue or any other diluter to a variety (blue partridge, for example), such as blue or chocolate (talking colour, not dun vs choc), judges will expect the bird to conform to the SOP for the variety, but taking the effects of the diluter into account: blue (or splash, chocolate or khaki) replacing black. Likewise if the diluter is for red pigment (cream or lemon).

For something like a showgirl, I would expect the bird to be judged by silkie standards for the variety. As for having a naked neck, I would guess that some judges might use the naked neck standard as regards too much/little neck and chest feathering, but I am not really familiar with the naked neck standard.

Realize that becoming a judge is a long and difficult process; most, if not all judges are breeders, and are usually well aware of such things as barring lightening skin. Due to that, some judges would cut some slack for cuckoo silkies having lighter skin; others will not. This is an area where there is no SOP allowing lighter skin and combs on cuckoo silkies: if you simply judge the plumage by cuckoo SOP and the remainder of the bird by the silkie SOP, many, if not most cuckoos would be DQed by the silkie standard.

Paints have no SOP, so judging is based first and foremost on the silkie standard. Things like light eyes and skin (pigment holes) do not conform well to the silkie standard, and therefore probably have more of an affect on placement than would number or size of spots or darker hackles, but with every judge it can be different.

APA and ABA; recognition is separate for each; not all ABA recognised varieties and breeds are APA recognised, and vice versa. Fortunately, for silkies they are the same.

No, I'm not a member. I just hatched some for the first time and am at this point wavering between silkies and d'uccles. My very first chicken was a d'uccle and I was in love with that bird. His name was Turkey. My husband called him "the little $hitter". LOL. Oh the personality that bird had! Then my MIL brought her dog and she killed my little guy. He was only maybe eight weeks. But we had really bonded and he followed me everywhere - and he was housed with other chicks. I know, OT chicken people would be appalled but each creature is unique and some can be very special.
Boy did I digress...anyway....I really love the partridge silkie and these little ones are a lot of fun. I got three partridge, two lavs, one buff, one white, two black. The very light partridge (mystery guy) appears to have lavender coloring. Could that be?
