Yes, Jaz and Minkie.

Cool- dark boy's babies to see what they look like. I noticed some have really dark chests and backs - are you going to do your usual wonderful job of photographing what they look like growing up? I would be interested to see what the differences in the light chested to the dark chested look like in the juvenile and adult feathers. You know me, inquiring minds want to know...

These were the first batch of eggs that I had earmarked to send to you, so I am very interested to see also. I will do my best! Remember, my little avatar girl that looks so light (in fact looks a ton like this new little lighter one) is now one of my darkest females:

I just love her feet!

She just came out of an extreme moult, so this color on her should be accurate. This was a cloudy day but I tried to get some shots so you can see the penciling in her feathers. Do you think she is too dark to mate with Dark Boy? She has really good type and posture I think and I am going to try and show her in January.

I wonder if you have a sex-linked chick down there. I know in some Barnvelder lines you can tell the sex of the chicks by their down chest color. It will be fun to see pictures of them growing up. I just wish my birds had co-operated with going broody when you had those eggs. I have one girl right now that is threatening to go broody, but it may be because of the two chicks in the same coop, gave her one egg to see if she will really stick with it or if she will quit and co-mother the two in there. If she sticks would it be possible to get some eggs from you in the next week?

I don't know anything about sex linked down, but you know I have baby pictures through adult of the ones I have now.

CeeCee was out of the nest this morning when I went out to let everyone out of the barn and I think she has eight or nine (they were running around so fast!). The three oldest were outside the next running around and she had I believe six more in there running around. They look just like the first three. Two dark chested ones, two light chested ones and at least one or maybe two very light ones. I really didn't want to worry about chicks through the winter, but the hen had other ideas. She will be raising these chicks for about two months before she starts laying again and these babies are all hers and Dark Boy's exclusively. I showed one of CeeCee's daughters at that last show that I went to and she got BV - that's the reason I wanted to use her exclusively with him.

I could put a couple of the other partridge girls in with Dark Boy to get some more eggs, but I don't have any pulled aside right now. Just let me know (they are with my lavender rooster right now). I don't know how well they are laying right now - today it is 85 and Thursday it will be 45 - that always throws off the egg laying.

Another question about the two or three light ones - do you think these might possibly be lavender partridge (that I have been trying to get)? CeeCee was with my lavender partridge rooster before I made Dark Boy's pen. I bought CeeCee so I don't know her background bloodlines. OR do you think they are the smutty whites? I collected the eggs for about two weeks after I moved her, but there is a slim chance, soooo.......

I got a couple of new pictures of Henley today. She is 6 and a half weeks. Anyone have any thoughts on her? sex or her coloring? Her crest was wet. She plays in her water constantly.

I just hate trying to sex other peoples babies, because it takes so many factors before I decide on my own babies that I get to touch, examine, and study. From the coloring alone I would say girl. I have a friend that would insist that the beak is a male (beak sexing has never worked for me). I'll guess girl though.

What is beak sexing? Also for partridge, how is coloring different on boy and girl babies? Sorry for all the questions, Im new at silkie babies. I hope she is a she. She is my husbands favorite, and has a very sweet disposition.

Sorry about butting in but I noticed Henley's beak, too. She has a face like a girl so I was thinking girl with an interesting beak. I am clueless about beak sexing. Mostly clueless about sexing.

Just from my own babies - the girls have more of a uniform color (exception the head which may be darker). My boys get a rich dark copper red color starting on the shoulders when they are young.

You can do a search I think for beak sexing and it will show you picture examples of male and female beaks. The male beak has more of a curve with a hook (think eagle type), the female has a straighter beak. But remember I said that doesn't work for me. I have many females with the "eagle" beak. And I have had a lot of little boys with very affectionate and sweet dispositions. But see, you can see, touch, and really "know" your own babies. The sure fire way to sex is when they lay an egg, because sometimes even a female can crow!!!

Since you don't know if she is a Split you can't guess Lavender. Her chicks might be Splits though, but the recessive gene does not show up in chick down so that would not be a way to tell. Smutty White is harder to get than it sounds, Recessive White with two copies covers everything. I suspect you MAY have another of those interesting Columbian Carrying chicks.. and she may be carrying some VERY interesting genetics there!
