Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

UGH I AM TIRED OF THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY!

Yesterday one of my silkies were having a bit of a harder time than usual, gave her some direct electrolytes and mixed a boosted dose of Electrolytes in all the waterers... Today Snowball was looking much better, was out and about this morning. I was gone for part of the day, and just running aorund outside a few time when I did get back home. Seen Snowball in the coop - figured she was laying an egg, in her favorite corner. Come back out at about 6, and shes on the other side of the coop, and had passed away. I think it was the drastic rise in humidity from the storm we had yesterday and the little showers today - today was much cooler than the past few days (if you can call 93 cooler but from 98-100 last week it was better)

I am heart broken - Snowball was given to me and my daughter last year as a present from a Lady I barely knew, and while she was only a pet quality silkie she was one of my favorite silkies personality wise - a protective mother, determined broody, sweet and sociable with me and my daughter. My daughter is very sad - Snowball was her favorite hen - and one I said just earlier today would never leave here despite being a free hen. I know she was around 2 years old when I got her, so she passed away at 4, way too early for that awesome girl.

This heat is just horrible, I have now lost 2 silkies and WHY must it seem to be the favorites?

I don't know how much heartache I can take. There aren't words to express and the hearts keep breaking and then there are fewer words.

SoS I am so sorry for your loss of Snowball. I know the hurt your little girl feels, I have seen it this month in my own daughter. When Sandy passed away, I was hoping Cheyenne was sleeping but she came into the bathroom and saw her and the heart wrenching sobs began. She raised Sandy from a day old and they watched Saturday morning cartoons rogether, ate cold pizza and went riding on her bicycle...she even went to school with her three times during the fifth grade. Cheyenne practices her saxophone everyday...playing for the chickens and our horse. It is hard on me but even worse when it is the pal of a child.

So far, I have lost 15 to the heat, 1 to a coyote, 2 to a fox, 2 ducks to heat and 1 duck grieved himself to death after his mate died.

Told my DH that when he gets back next week, that coop is getting a work over including AC. I have had it.

Pamela was pet quality partridge but she was loved. I was telling Speckledhen that I would gladly sacrifice one of the girls that died to the fox if I could have the other 13 back. It is unimaginable to lose 14 in one day...it keeps you awake at night for sure.

I can imagine that the weather in KY is a whole lot different than the weather in Oregon. Has to be a complete culture shock for you and now this... I'd be packing my bags.

You have no idea the regret in my heart...but husband wanted to move...so here we are. I had a bear and a mountain lion that came through my yard daily in Oregon...bi losses in 2 years...come here and it is hell. I lost my beloved Thor to the heat last July 3 months after arriving and now this June and July has been a nightmare. I want to scream.

Ya know they say we should always look for the positive and not concentrate on the negative, but when so many people are feeling the effects of this weather on our little treasured angels, it becomes very difficult to feel anything but negative. We all know as adults that this too shall pass, but it's taking a lot from each one of us. At least we have each other and each of us can share with each other the heart break that we are all experiencing together. I think the positive is that it has done a lot to bring us closer together as friends and comrades. For that I am willing to break off little pieces of my heart to share with you all.

Well said Penne ... there is positive in my situation. Speckledhen suddenly got 2 broodies so she has put orp eggs under them for me...I will not get any of the other breeds I lost, instead I am going to yet to help a critically endangered breed. Mahogany Russian Orloffs. As soon as it cools I will order hatching eggs... and I am getting some Olive Egger eggs from Wynette. They will become my new big girls. And I have my silkies and duccle. I am looking for some good in all of this it is just hard when the hurt is so new.

I really like the color. She is going to change color a bunch of times before she grows up and I think she will turn out to be a beautiful bird. I can't really tell too much else about her because of the way that you are holding her. Her foot feathering should get better. They tend to grow out more as they get older. I do see a problem with 1 or more pink toes and the actual feathering on the toes themselves could be better. Other than that I think that you have a nice little partridge Silkie. Congratulations! Take care of all of your birds in the heat that we all seem to be having!!! Make sure that you give them electrolytes in their water. Giving them pieces of frozen fruit and maybe some good cold yogurt or even ice cream will help. Take good care of them and don't let them out in the sun. If you have them in a barn it would be best to turn a fan on.
