Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Chicks will likely all be partridge.

White in silkies is usually recessive white, which hides anything under it. So wouldn't have any idea what genes that mother is carrying. Many times it's partridge, which the wildtype version is kind of the default chicken color.

I'd guess the bottom chick may have come from the porcelain since it has less chipmunking.

Thanks. I know its a wait and see thing but I'm interested in how they will grow out.

My little boy here is growing up. He's trying to keep watch, but is still so young he gets easily distracted. He's not going to have the nice dark black like his father, but I at least he's not orange. I can work with it like I have been.

He has a horrible, horrible comb, but I will work on that in future generations with hens from good combed roosters. He has nice color and good wings. That size mutation was too tempting to work with.

Maybe the big boys are expected to have the gnarly combs. I've seen some U.K. large fowl with some gross combs yet they make it in shows.

It's just bad combination of comb genes. I get bad ones with the little spikes sometimes. Working to get rid of it is an ongoing battle. His size still freaks me out a bit. All of my roosters have been pretty close to normal size. I think 6 oz heavy was the worst. That's some mutation he had happen. I know if you breed a bantam to a large fowl you get a bird that's midway in size because it only carries one bantam gene. Had a couple ameraucana like that. Offspring were all over on size. This silkie produced large chicks when bred to normal hens so it's not acting like the normal large gene as so far. I have 28 eggs from him in the incubator. We'll see what I get out of it. This will be a good test.

I was told by a breeder that there are large fowl Silkies and bantam Silkies and that the USA Silkies are the mid-size bantams (roughly 2-lb size). Mid-size bantams must carry a sneaky large fowl gene in their history which could explain your boy's mutation and comb difficulties.

Your babies are beautiful! Especially Mr Watson.
I have some bantam babies that I can't tell yet what they are. I hope they are Partridges!
