So sorry for your loss. That is really hard to deal with. I went out in August to find a hawk had flown through my aviary netting. I couldn't imagine how it got through since it was attached all the way around. I walked in at dusk and thought it was a silly pullet bouncing around till I found talons in my face with a hook beak!!!!!!!!!!

I screamed for my husband and he took "Care" of it. He put on welding gloves with a welding mask and grabbed it. He let it go at the other end of the property. The next day we counted all the chickens and all were still safe but, very shakened. They didn't want to come out of their coop! We inspected the netting to find it had dry rot and a weak spot. Sooo needless to say if it makes you feel any better

I hope, sometimes you can do everything to protect your babies and sometimes, things unforseen can happen out of your control. I hope that you can get through this and I think it was probably a weasel as others have said. They tend to do what you are describing.
