I am trying to recreate the partridge Brahma from scratch. I currently have available for breeding 2 roosters partridge rock/light Brahma cross. I no longer have that light Brahma roo but I do have other girls for his lines. I also have buff Brahma's of another line both hens and rooster.I have one dark Brahma hen. I want to breed this coming spring.
So my questions are:

1 What is rarer buff or brown partridge Brahmas? I am assuming at this point I could do one or the other?

2 Who should I breed to who?

3 How many lines (approx) are their?

The two roosters that I have to choose from are single comb and currently look a lot like my partridge rocks. They recently changed colors from a light Brahma color too this. I know that I could just buy some but I thought this would be a fun learning experience.

Any input appreciated,

Thanks.

You would be way ahead, time, effort, and money wise, to buy the best partridge brahmas available, at any price, than starting from scratch. You are looking at decades of work, many thousands invested in feed and eguipment. Then if all goes well, you end up with something that you could have gone out and bought years ago anyway. If you are determined to go through the process, I think I would work on a variety not currently available.

I might not get it anyway but I am just going to try it and have fun.

I am hoping to let broody hens raise my chicks to help keep the cost down. Also my birds are free range in the summer and I hope to give away a lot of my experiments for winter.
I don't have the available breeds to work on another variety anyhow.

I know it would be easier but I always tend to go about things the hard way anyhow.

i have a question. what would i get if i mate a partidge rock hen to a light brahma roo. my neighbor has the hens and i have the light brahmas. anything rare or just another mutt. thanks for ant info.....

no i didnt. only in europe. so i would have rare chicks. i am not trying to get rich i just love hatching and mixing breeds to see what i get. are last experiment was partridge rock hens and a barred rock rooster. they are five weeks old and are colored different so far. it will be interesting to see what colors they are in a few months....

On the feathersite page, check the brahma link titled Dan Powell's Brahma Project. It will give you an idea of what you are contemplating getting yourself into.
