I have a young EE hen (Emily) with a slight problem. I went down to put the chickens door up and I looked up and saw the birds all preening. I noticed that Emily had poop and a red bit of intestine coming out of her vent. This is kind of an inefficient way of explaining. Here are the questions.
1) What type of bird , age and weight? She is an EE young hen. I don't know her weight, but I don't think it is important. (I'll try to find out later.)
2) What is the behavior, exactly. She was on the roost and preening her vent which had poop over it and a red bit of flabby skin hanging out that did not belong outside of her. After I went to get my dad for help, she was down from the roost with the rest of the birds and poking around, not alone or sulking. When we rushed her to the house and began to wash her vent, she went stiff and she was frozen like she always is when I pick her up because she doesn't like me very much. After we brought her back down, she resumed being a chicken.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? Just about a half an hour since I saw, I don't know how long she was pasted up for.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma? The icky skin was a little bloody but it wasn't dripping blood or anything.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I think she may have just not gotten enough water today, and just got pasty.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? We ran her behind under warm water and got out all the poop blocking "the pathway". Then we sprayed it with an anti-fungal blu-kote spray and put her back. It looked like it was less swollen very quickly.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?I don't think she will need a vet, but if she does we probably would have trouble getting her to one.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Normal pine shavings, and the same coop she has been living in for 8 months
This was taken after we rised away the poop.

- 7) What has the bird been eating )and drinking, if at all. I think she may have eaten after, but I didn't see.
