I found one of my chicks with pasty butt this morning. They are 4 days old and were shipped in the mail. The chick itself is acting well, eating a lot, climbing on top of the Brisnea brooder, drinking regularly so I assume I caught it very early on.

I got warm water and a wash cloth and got as much off as I can. There was still some poop really stuck in the down feathers so I left that and decided to come back after it warmed up and had a wee break.

Upon returning it is still very active and I watched take a nice big poop which fell to the floor.

Does this mean they are probably good now or should I take it indoors and rinse it off until fully clean? Just trying not to add stress if not needed.

Thank you in advance for any help! First time chick raiser here with 10 black Australorps.

Looks good so far, she's not blocked. But it might build up again.

You should check her regularly for the next few days but I shouldn't think there would be any danger in letting her have until morning to get settled in the brooder, to eat and drink, and get used to things. :)

I was told to give my pasty-butt chicks wet mash to keep them well-hydrated. That is, to take their usual chick starter and mix it with water to the consistency of wet oatmeal.

For new baby chicks I put it into a lid from a peanut butter jar or a mayonnaise jar.

Thank you, I really appreciate the response and I will do that in the morning!

I moved them up to a bigger space tonight so I can fit in another dish with the mash. Added probiotics and immune booster to the water also, so fingers crossed.

Party butt! :gig:lau
Best autocorrect ever!
🤣 🤣 🤣

I thought about fixing it, but party butt is here to STAY!

Just a note,

If you're using additives to their water be sure to offer plain water too. It's possible to OD on electrolytes, etc. (Imagine having nothing to drink but a Gatorade flavor you don't like).

IMO, the bigger the brooder the better. Mine is almost ridiculous -- 4x8 (with half of it blocked off for the first week), and they use all of it as soon as I give them access. :)

Every time I find a pasty butt I clean off the poo or cut off the feathers/down . Then I take oil and coat the area. Works well.
Ooo never thought about cutting it off, great idea! I will get her all cleaned up today if need be. I kind of liked having a little left so I know who it was to monitor as well. Although if I would know if it came back too.

I have no idea how people tell all the chicks apart! I do see they definitely look all slightly different just so hard to remember whose who for me still!
