I just got my chicks today so im new to all this. I read the info about pasty but and cleaned her up like it says but im seriously confused... it doesnt look like its coming from where its supposed to... When i cleaned her up it fell out in a pellet like lump but theres more stuck in there. Im worried about her when shes trying to walk now she is wobbly and falling over. and it looks like she is really backed up. What do i do??? Im attaching a pic so you can see what i mean. (this may be a dumb question but are hens supposed to have two open spots on them?) I assume the one right under her tail which is not blocked is ok but this one in the pic is awful. i feel so bad for her. :( I have had her for aproximately 5 hours she came like this from the store.

Chickens have only ONE opening. The one under her butt that is clear IS the opening. The bloody looking area you are showing is actually where the chick was attached to the egg. It looks like it's an open wound. DO NOT "CLEAN" THAT OUT. THAT IS A WOUND. NOT A HOLE. It looks like a piece of feed got in the wound. If I were you, I'd put a topical antibiotic on and keep an eye on it. Also try to either wrap it or put some liquid band-aid on it.

X2. Looks like that's where the "umbilical cord" was attached. Put some Neosporin on it (regular, NOT the kind with pain reliever) and let her rest. She may or may not make it depending on whether there is internal damage.

Thank you. That is what I was afraid of. I will be going to my TSC in the morning to see if they can exchange her. Sad to do so but she was like this when i got her and Im a stickler for getting what you paid for. :( poor chickie i dont think she will make it i think your right about the internal damage. she is really deformed there the other red pullet I have is nice and closed up and no problems. it must have happened when she was really young then she got pasty butt over top of it and it just snowballed. I will just keep her warm and comfy for now. poor little gal.

Oh my gosh, you really should read a beginner book on chicks...I read 2 books...twice...and am STILL learning a year later!! There is so much to know.
My books were (and still are, even today I needed to reference) "The Chicken Whisperers Guide" and "Chick Days". I think I may have made my 1 year old hen worse today by not knowing what I was doing as she is sick so knowledge is power when it comes to chickens and especially chicks!

Chickens only have one hole and it's called a vent...they pee, poop and lay eggs from it. And their umbilicus isn't near it
. You really should add some Neosporin and leave the poor thing be to heal now :( Best of luck!!

Chicks are $3.00 if that? She's not dead yet, she just needs some TLC and some antibiotic ointment. If she doesn't make it, then I think you go back but giving back a live chick is certain death! I had a very sickly chick and I babied her to good health and she is now 11 months old and my best egg layer!

Ok, first no need to be rude. i dont need a book i can look everything up on the internet. (which i did and am doing.) I have a bunch of different sites on chicks and chickens bookmarked. The reason I was confused is because I was reading that the vent is the only one and clearly this chick has "two" I sort of assumed it was a wound but was getting clarification. Everything i searched for said nothing about this type of problem. I dont have neosporin and live in a town where nothing is open past 6pm. So as i said i am doing what i can to keep her comfortable. If she looks like she is going to make it in the morning then i will grab some neosporin. If not then TSC will hear about it.

Im not sure if you were being rude but it seemed that way. It is not my intention to hurt my animals all of them are incredibly spoiled chicks included. This chick was injured when I got it and I didnt realize it was until it was too late to go back to the store. I came here for help if this is going to be one of those forums where those who ask for help get attacked by the community i will look else where. I hope thats not the case as i have met some nice ones so far.

Thank you again to those with a helpful answer.

Its not the money but the fact that they shouldnt be selling injured or sick livestock. its just wrong. And again... I am taking care of her. If i didnt care about her i wouldnt have asked for help in the first place.

Pasting always seems to happen the first week. Chicks getting fluctuating temperatures can perpetuate it too. I've found that a jumbo size cotton ball soaked in warm water works really well. Hold the chick in one hand securely over a sink. Dip the cotton ball in the warm water and gently sandwich it around the hardened dropping. It may take a minute or two, but after it is moistened it can be gently picked off and removed easily. I pat it dry gently with soft tissue like toilet paper before putting back in the brooder. Someone once mentioned a small tap of mineral oil on the vent prevents pasting (it helps), in addition to proper temperature, and offering chick scratch (finer than regular chicken scratch) in addition to starter/grower feed. It helps firm up the stools. At two weeks old you can start giving them a sprinkle of chick grit (just fine grit, no oyster shell or coal) in their feed. I think if you keep that chick's vent clean and use a small amount of triple antibiotic to prevent infection if the tissue is irritated. I like Neo-Poly B because it has bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B, all safe bacteria killers.

When a chick gets pasted up the other chicks will also sometimes peck at the spot turning it into a wound...I would just try to clean it. I had 3 chicks out of 26 paste up one time each. I just wet a paper towel and held it on their tushy And just rubbed the poo off. It's a little harder than it sounds since the poo that makes for pasty behinds is the consistency of cement...
