It varies from moment to moment
Two of my new Barred Rock chicks have pasty butt. On one, i managed to clear the vent but there's still dried poo stuck to its bottom and I can't get it off. The second one I suspect has the vent blocked entirely. How do I help them (preferably without making them absolutely terrified of me)? I need a walk-through.

Get a paper towel wet with warm water and slowly loosen up the poop, be very gentle as you can hurt the chick. Keep loosening it up until it all comes off. It might take awhile to get it off but keep loosening it up and eventually it will come off.

I was trying to do that, but I was scaring it so bad it was hard to hold it still as I was working.

A few days old. The wings are just starting to feather out a bit.
Ok, well could you get someone else to hold the chicks while you get the poop off? I don't know if I would put a chick that young in a dish of water, I probably just wouldn't do that at this age.
