So my eggs hatched today and one chick has pasty butt. I want to know what to do for it. How to remove the blockage (if i can) without hurting the bird (or killing it). is there a step by step guide (with pictures) on how to remove it. It just hatched today and not sure when to take action. It has been walking around the incubator. I have other chicks in there and eggs that have just started pipping. I don't want to run the risk of shrink wrapping.

anyone?

Not too hard really. Just a little bit...no fun. :D You get a paper towel, or a cloth you don't want, (clean) wet it pretty good, then the poo, and with your index finger, and your thumb, you gently work the poo off with the towel or cloth covering your fingers of course. It will either come off easy, or you will have to keep at it until it wipes clean, with a very moist towel.

I dont know what it is. It looks like blood in it as well. Like dark reddish. When do i do this??? I am setting up thebrooder now. I am not sure what to use... wood shavings from the store or pee pee pads...i think i am going to use both like wood shavings and then pads on top so minimize shavings in water and food. I did open the bator for a quick second cuz they pushed one of the hatching eggs over to where the hole was facing the ground. I replaced it immediately.

I of course dont want to hurt the poor chick.

The pads will be great for them at first on their little feet, and, will keep them from getting spayed leg. Good idea on the pads. I use the shelf liners myself, with the chips under it. Then, I pull it out in a couple of days when it starts getting messy, and there are the wood chips.

Blood? Not sure why there would be blood. If you are not sure this is poo, just leave it for one day. It won't hurt the chick for one day. It may be the cord you are seeing. The little bottom and the cord area are pretty close. Just watch it, and see if tomorrow you can tell the difference better. There shouldn't be blood in the poo. Come to think of it, if you are just getting them into a brooder, there probably isn't any poo yet. They usually don't poo for a day or two. :)

This is my set up. Not sure if i should use the pads cuz i would think the pine would be a bit warmer. But i can put a pad on top of it. I am not putting them into the brooder til sunday afternoon. It has not been a full day yet for most of em.

I tried to unclog it but it kinda bled. So i put it back in the incubator. Any help?

I just did my morning chick chores and 3 of my 26 had pasty butt, I cleaned them all off, but none had blood in it! Believe they are now 4 days old, as were shipped at 1 day old..at least 18 were, they other 8 were purchased on Thursday from Atwoods in Fort Smith, AR

As i said i dont think it is pasty butt since of the position. I do think it is the naval. =0(.

It is the naval. That really isn't that big..so, just let it be. Hopefully the others won't pick on it. When it is all fluffed up, it should be pretty well covered. Most of that will fall off on it's it's own. Yeah, best not to pick on it. If the baby is up and walking around, it's fine. Cute butt..now where is the face?

Nice set up. Won't need a real large bulb in there with that small size. I'm thinking a 60 at first, then down to a 40...or, of course, it's according to how high you have it hanging from the box. You will know, as the chick moves either right under it..too cool, or if it moves away..too warm. If they lay right around it..it's usually just fine.
