I got four silkies last Wednesday. They were two days old. Two dark and two light colored. Both of the dark ones have had pasty butt. The last time I had to clean one of them was Saturday. The other one I clean a few times a day. She has been getting sitz baths and then runs around the others screaming about her abuse, and then a few hours later, pasty butt.
She is quite the screamer. Yesterday all of the chickens came to see what was going on.
I hope that this will stop soon. But is there something to be done besides cleaning it off and anointing with Vaseline?
thanks

How warm is it in the brooder? Pasty butt can be related to too much heat. Do the chicks have the option of both a warm area and a cooler area?
The silkie chicks have been in large container with heat lamp over one end. Last week the temps were hot(almost 100F) but nights are still in 50's and I'm still bringing little chicks inside at night. Now day temps back in 80's.
The lighter gray one got cleaned off last night and was able to trim a few feathers from butt. Right after I got her cleaned up she pooped a solid piece almost an inch long.
I was also able to get a good dab of vaseline on her.
Other three chicks are fine. I look for thermostat to keep eye on temp. Thanks.

I had chickens ( a dozen ) years and years ago as a newbie. Who would have thought they'd all live since I had no idea what to do 25 years ago? Now I got 12 chicks, 2 days old, and they all have pasty butt to the max (with the exception of a few) and it's day 6 days since we purchased them.

So I started with some tepid water and the pasty on their arses is hard as a rock. Warm water? Followed by rubbing it with vegetable oil? They are (now) on medicated chick starter feed which started yesterday. The gal that sold them to us said non-medicated, so they went thru 5 lbs of starter feed non-medicated until yesterday. I've also heard the cocci they develop with non-medicated food can cause pasty butt.

So, warm water and vegetable oil? I hear yes/no yes/no on molasses so I will stay away from that. They'll be fine once I get the hard 'literal' crap off their butts. I don't want to lose any of these girls and the roo.
