pasty butt?

so glad i started this thread!!
and special thanks to dawn for the pictures earlier in this thread - they were invaluable.

i checked my mini-flock this afternoon (day three out of the box they came in) and even though every one is eating, drinking and perky, we have four with the beginnings of pasty butt. glad i knew what to do!

i soaked them witha really wet paper towel, got the gunk off, warmed and dryed them and put them back in the brooder.
i will check them all again tomorrow and use the baby oil trick if i see more.

see my avatar? that's one of my new babies!!

Pasty butt update (now there is something I never thought I'd type!

Our little patient has improved but I did see a little pasty today after work. Cleaned her up, redid the baby oil .Definitely not as bad, but how long will it last? I'm worried...

As long as her little..ahem..opening isn't occluded, she should be alright, right??!!0

Not to belabor this point, but shouldn't my chick's pasty butt be going away? It is getting better, but had to do the 'ol "scrape and lube" this morning again. SHe seems none the worse for wear, really. A little light on the butt down, and maybe not quite as hardy as the other two, but eating, drinking, etc.

Argh! Should I go the ACV route?

Ok, I am really glad I came across this too, because I have noticed that a bunch of my chickies have dirty bums. I was just about to post a thread about dirty bums... One was really bad, and my husband gently got most of it off. Is it normal for them to try and groom their little behinds for a while after we have cleaned them??? The one that hubby cleaned up is just kinda laying around and pecking at her bum.....poor thing. I am worried about my poopy-bumed chicks now

desertgirl, it can take a while, just stay on top of it. Have you tried the molasses in the water thing? It cleared our pasties fast.

purplepeep, yes, often they will peck at their bum after cleaning, especially if you pulled some fuzz off in the process. As long as they aren't bloodying themselves they should be fine.

I will reiterate "Adding a small amount of molasses to the water will help pasty chicks recover quicker. Mix it so the water looks like a weak tea." It worked very well for ours after being suggested to us by another BYCer

Yes...you will know pasty butt when you see it. They either have it or they dont. I was in a feed store a while back when this place was having ''chick day'' and almost all of their chicks had a marble size ball of dried poop hangin off each of thier little butts.

I mentioned to the girl working there that all of her chicks had BAD pasty butt and she seemed not to care....I just wanted to get ahold of the poor little things and clean them myself

I didn't have baby oil with my first batch so I used a little olive oil (the ev type less stinky) didn't seem to upset the others or make them pick and helped the babies...
