Pasty Butt...

I've had day olds in this:

Currently have babies in that coop without a heat lamp. I'm trying out my brand new Brinsea Eco Glow brooder - the chicks LOVE it! It has worked beautifully in my outdoor brooder coop with temps being down to 38 degrees outside. I did supplement with a 100 watt light bulb for the first week, because I was worried about it working in the cold weather. (it's rated down to 40 degrees INSIDE and I'm using it outside) It is radiant heat, like a heating pad, no fire danger like a heat lamp and it's only uses 18 watts of power.
how exactly do those work???

i never cease to be amazed at y'all's competence. i read this forum all the time. i'm going to let my babies be the thermometer. if i decide to really get into this chicken thing, i'm going for that radiant brooder - that's too cool. i've started making little noises to hubby about a camera to keep an eye on predators. i'll get him worn down yet.

It's radiant heat. The heat source is on the underside. (don't let the chicks on top fool you) You can touch it with your bare hand and it just feels warm. The chicks snuggle under it like they would a mother hen. I don't have half the cheeping that I've had under a heat lamp - the chicks are quiet and happy, just like under a broody hen.

It doesn't provide any light though, so I do have a 25 watt red party light for them as my coop doesn't have any lighting on it's own.

This is the first time I've brooded chicks with it (it was a gift from a friend), but so far I'm thrilled with it.

Well, you're getting chicks - so you WILL be hooked.

I started with 7 chicks and now have 22 chickens, plus the 11 in the brooder.

Hubby has a trail cam and he can hardly wait till the chicks start going outside so he can put the cam up to catch whatever might be lurking....lol there is atread on here that shows trail cam pics....have him check it out, it's pretty awesome

oh ok cool

I'm the proud new mama to 10 babies. So far only one has had a problem with pasty butt. I've had to clean it 3 times now over the last 2 days with a wet warm paper towel. But try as I might, I can never get all of it off (I'm afraid of being too rough). I'm thinking I may have to actually trim some of the fur from under her butt as it's seriously like super glue and just won't budge! I'm afraid of running her butt under water and scaring her half to death. Any other suggestions?

I tried dipping one of my chicks butts into a bowl of warm water and I thought she was going to have a little heart attack so I just wet the paper towel and held it to her until the poop loosened up. Took a little bit of patience but we got quality cuddling time during the wait :)

How did you dry her? I had to do this to my tiny White Silkie. She got herself pretty wet with some thrashing. I Tried to dry her with the towel, but she's so fragile and Feathers don't seem to dry easily. I put her under the lamp ad lowered it but she's shivering quiet a bit. It's been about 20 min and she is still kinda wet and shivering. The other chicks aren't helping much. The lamp is very low too.. Thoughts?

Two of my girls have what looks like pasty butt however, the vents "wink" at me if I blow air on them so I'm not sure if they are blocked or not.
I have tried moist towels; grit; adjusting the temperature in the brooder; mash and egg yolk, but still the pasty butt lingers.
help.
