Hi I am new to this forum and maybe I am not posting at the right place so let me know please. I am from canada and I am mating my pavlovskaya rooster on my barred rock hen and I want to know more about the genetic of the offsprings. I know they should have the comb of the pav roo but other than that I am in the dark so I am asking for genetic knoledge over it. Thanks!!

I'm not at all familiar with that breed but looking online they have a fascinating history. Some people believe them to be the foundation stock of the Polish breed. My understanding is that they are pretty small, come in different colors/patterns, have a Vee shaped comb, a flattened crest, and feathers on the legs.

I don't know the genetics of their Vee comb, whether the Vee part of that is dominant or recessive so I trust you on that.

The crest and the feathered legs should be dominant, though because the Barred Rock does not have those genetics they may not be as impressive as on your Pavlovskaya. Still, expect to see a crest and feathers on the legs.

If your Pavlovskaya are not barred you can possibly have another interesting effect from that cross. The barred gene is sex linked, which means that the hen gives it to her sons but not her daughters. So any males hatched form that dross will be barred since barring is a dominant trait. Any females will not be barred as long as the rooster is not barred. If the offspring is white you will not see the barring but it will be there. Depending on down colors/patterns you may be able to see a light spot on the head of the males that won't be there on female chicks when they hatch.

Thanks for posting, I'd never heard of that breed before. And welcome to the forum.

Hi, they are now born,

Males
It seem like they all have a white spot on their head, have barred pattern on feathers, some have a white mask and they have pale legs

Females
It seems like they dont have a white spot on their head, have black feathers with a little brown on it, some have a brown mask and they have dark legs

Both
I would say half of them has some feathers on their legs. They all have a single comb that become wider on the top end. They have a small crest and a small beard.

Let me know what you think and what you would do, breed them together or breed them back to the pavlovskaya roo.

Thanks

I agree, what are your goals, what are you trying to accomplish? If your goals are to enhance the characteristics of the pavlovskaya then breed him over his daughters. If you want the characteristics of the Barred Rock (mainly appearance, size and production) then breed a cockerel to your Barred Rock hen. If you breed sibling to sibling you'll get a more general mix.

In any case, let them grow up enough so you can select your best to breed.
