Five Midnight B/S and 1-2 Opal B/S eggs warming up for saturday again.Just moved down to bottom of bator,looks like 2 OBS eggs are quitters leaving 1 of those good. I've been having a hard time with Opals quitting,,time for a new diet for them next spring too.

What are you changing on diet? If you have any opal chicks for sale, I would be interested.

Upping the protein levels by 5% put an abrupt end to my new BSSP eggs that was quitting over 65% of he time,,eggs laid 3 days after extra protein was added increased hatching to about 85% now,,everyone wants opals,,all I want is Cameos,,,,,Mmmaddie just got 3 of my first hatched Opla b/s chicks,,should be learning Colorado life in the next few hours,,I'll have to see how many more hatch and how many I have in the brooders,,not many in the brooders tho,,sold a lot of their eggs this summer/ Which brngs me to this,,does anyone here grow and feed mealworms? Those buggers have like 38% protein,,very easy to raise,multiply like rabbits,,ad theres all kinds of threads here on growing them yourself,,feed has went up $4 a 50lb bag here in the last 3 weeks,,corn is only 8% protein,,half or less than a healthy breeding pea needs.

What protein % are you aiming for? I use a 22% super layer mini pellet, 28% game bird crumble and high protein cat food at a ratio of 3:1:1. Veggies, fruits and scratch are fed separately.

Hopefully I can help you out on the cameo. Do you just want adults or are chicks and yearlings something you are interested in?

I took Lil Zoos hint and checked with Craig Hopkins,,he has a 2 yr old Cameo w/e male and 2 cameo w/e hens 1 yr old. I'm hoping to move several IB split to peach males to buy Cameos and peach,,so I'm still looking until next weekend when he's hosting the UPA convention. I'm wanting them to be breeding age next spring if not already.Cameo b/s and straight Cameo seem to become extinct as well now when I start looking for them Most here gets by fine on 18% layer crumbles during breeding season along with fruits and greens.But with the quitting BSSP eggs over 2 weeks worth in a row I started adding 29% cat food to arrive at a 24% protein level feed for them,which showed up immediatedly with much higher hatch rates.

I get mealworms from petsmart, it's like $5 for 100 of them and they don't last very long, the peas LOVE them.. I'd consider growing/raising my own mealworms, seems like that and mandarin oranges are my kiddos' favorite treats.

Just to let you know I bought live mealworms from an ebay seller and it worked really well.
I think it was 6,000 for around $20??
They live a long time, you just have to keep them in the fridge and feed them every week or so.
