pea gravel for ducks?

I would definitely shy away from doing the whole pen in pea gravel. The choice is yours of course. I would only use the pea gravel around your water sources. Its great for that. In the long term sand is better. I have been to several zoos and lots of avairies and everyone stays away from too much concrete or pea gravel due to the foot problems (bumblefoot in particular) caused by them in the long run. Dont want to debate this prior to others comments. Pointless cause I definitely wont budge on this one and they probably wont either. Again your choice.

I got a scoop of pond rock, (think larger pea gravel) 2X . I covered my night aviary in 3-4 inches of it. It is on a slope, I just hose it. Occasionally I have to rake it up a bit as it tends to move downhill a bit.I put rubbermaid bins in it with some straw for nests., when I need them.I live in Georgia on a hill, so sand wouldn't work, it would wash away quickly. I also put regular gravel on some of the high traffic areas like gate openings.

so, do you think if i got ahold of some patio stones could i lay those down and just spray them down when needed?

Hello. I am currently adding some pea gravel to my ducks' yard. The ground has begun to erode from dumping the pool, so I thought I'd dig a deep-ish pit, fill it with a layer of sand (2-3 inches deep) and top it with a layer of gravel (5 inches deep). Ideally it will allow the water to drain all the way through without running all over the yard. Now that i have my hole dug and all the materials, I'm having concerns about the pea gravel that I got... it's not as round and smooth as i was expecting, it's actually a bit pokey. Worrying about bumble foot.

The landscaping place has small (3/4 inch) river rock, which is smoother than the pea gravel, but larger. I could add a top layer of river rock to the gravel pit. But I honestly don't know if that would be better or worse on their feet.

It's just a small area of their yard, but the dirt everywhere else is becoming quite compacted so I wouldn't want to add something that's going to be any harder on their feed. What would you do?
