It is true both sexes will display. However one year I decided to test the theory out that any displaying birds that either grab, attempt to or actually go through the entire mating motions(I've seen birds as young as one week old do that) were males by tagging all that did any of those. Those that displayed but did not do any of the above were not tagged... it turns out all of the tagged ones did turn out to be males. Could be coincidence as I did this experiment only one year... but think it probably is a good sign of chick being a male. Did the chick try to peck at grab your hand or fingers?
The tail vibrating/shaking is very normal for both sexes, so is doing the little sudden turns to intensely vibrate at anything.
Wow, I didn't know females displayed too. One of my older polish hens will fluff up and strut like a rooster, so I guess it's normal for girls to act like boys lol!
As for my peachick, yes, he displayed, then pecked my hand, and jumped on it. I wasn't sure what he was doing, so I had to come here and ask the experts!
Ooh that sounds exactly like the behavior I tagged as 'potential males' that did turn out to be males.. be interesting to see if your little one also turns out to be a male.. need to increase the sample size!
I also have a 3 week old peachick that I incubated and has become very clingy. Today I had the two, two week old silkies out sunbathing in one coop and the peachick the other part of the garden in a covered pen as soon as I went over to the others what a noise!! He/she, now called Blue lives meal worm and chopped hard boiled eggs. Blue knows instinctively how to preen , peck sunbathe etc. The only thing is keeping Blue under the brooder in our sitting room. Which is now getting quite smelly. At what age will Blue be able to stay the night in the newly built coop??!
try to bet him on medicated starter feed as soon as possible put some in a large flat low lip container and scratch at it show the bird, your the mom u have to teach it to do this stuff if its not doing it naturally .
