So I recently hatched a lone peachick, purple bs I believe, and we’re looking to get it a companion(s). Currently we have it housed in a Rubbermaid storage container in the spare bedroom. Now, I’m trying to set up a larger pen to house them when it’s time to move them out of the house.
I have a 5x2x2 wooden shipping crate, courtesy of GE and my employer, in the garage that we use as a brooder now. It’s currenly full with about 20 serama chicks, prolific little buggers. If I can get it empty I think this would be a good pen to move them to next in a few more weeks when they outgrow the Rubbermaid.
Another option I have is a 4’x4’x2.5’ rabbit hutch with a wire bottom. It currently has our 4 growing call ducks in it, but they need to be moved soon anyways.
The last option, and the best one in my opinion, I have a 4’x7’ pen about 8’ tall inside the barn on rubber mats with shavings. It has perches and places to sit or hide and room to play and have fun. Currently, our adult Seramas are in it and 4/6 hens are sitting on nests and popping out babies every couple of days. I would gladly relocate them for a few months until they are able to go on dirt with the rest of the flock.
What are your guys thoughts and opinions about the options I listed? What would your advice be on where and when to move first and so on? How much room per peachick is necessary? My gf said only 1 just so they aren’t lonely but I’m trying to get her to say yes to more if we have the space. Let’s face it, if I get her in a room with a bunch of little peas there’s no way we only walk out with one. Peas are certainly more addictive than I would have ever thought.
