Peachick leg problems!!! *please help*

Try the Strattle leg method first and see if it helps... also be careful giving too much vitamins... it can cause problems also.

Yep Chickenzoo, I think you're right there, wasnt even looking at the exact location, it is up in the knee joint. Follow those methods listed, and you might as well go on and do it as soon as possible , the vitamins will help, but they wont fix that. Also as mentioned, vitamins in moderation are great, just dont do it constantly, once it starts showing improvement, you can taper off on them, as a rule, I give vitamin supplements about once every week to 10 days just to keep everybody thick and healthy.
Good luck, keep us posted on its progress.

Hi guys thanks for the help!! I tried the bandaid method but he is strugling to break free which he has a few times so i have to keep replacing the bandaid now he has resorted to biteing it. The bandais doesnt seem to be doing much as the kink doent dseem to be at the knee joint but rather further up like the hip or something it looks like it could be from too much protein. If the cause is too much protein can it be cured or is there nothing i can do!?!?! I want to make him as comfortable as possible and make his recovery as quick as possible if thats an option, Please help!! I dont know what to do if the leg is bent further up from too much protein?!?! Thanks you!!

That actually looks like a slipped tendon to me. It's the tendon that runs up the back of the hock joint,it slips out of the bone groove. I used to have the link, but have since missplaced it. I've had to put down 1 peachick and 1 turkey poult because of this. If you run your finger up the back of the leg you can feel the tendon. It fits into a groove at the back of the hock (or elbow) joint. If it's out of place it will be beside not behind (or in the groove) of the joint. When it's out of place it shortens its self. Slowly pulls the leg further out and up. You can try and put it back in. I personally couldn't keep it in place long enough to affect a cure. Good luck if this is it.I've read that it can be done.

Hi guys I have been reading about slipped tendons and it always seems to say that the leg gets pulled closer and closer to the peachick and the peachick is unable to walk. Well he is very much so able to walk and run but with a little limp so what could it be??? could i be from to much protein?? what are the signs of leg problems from to much protein?? thanks again

It has been like this for like 3 days or so he doesnt seem in pain but the leg just has twisted right out now. I gave him vitamins yesturday and will give him more tomorrow (i dont want to overdo the vitamins). I tried the hobble method but because his upper leg is fine it just twists out from the knee joint when i put the hobble on it doesnt do anything becasue the leg is still twisted out but his legs are closer together. SO i was thinking of making the little guy a splint, so how would you make a splint to twist hs leg front ways???

Ok I know you get alot of emails regarding legs, and i cant figure this one out so hopefully with your knowledge we will find a cure!!

I have a peachick that is 3 weeks old, has been doing great, up untill about 4 days ago. As this is my first shot at raising peafowl i am determined to get him better!

Thanks you so much for all the help and support you guys have given me, it is VERY much appreciated, with using all the comments and information you have given me I have found it is most likely 1 of 3 problems. (although i am dumbfounded as he doesnt fit any of them) so here goes:

1) Slipped tendon:
If it was slipped tendon it seems he would have his knee would swell and get hot, his leg would shrink and he would be unable to walk. Well he can walk and even run just with a limp, he can fully stretch his leg out by himself, his hock joint is not swelling or hot to touch?? and the tendon feels in place...

2) From too much protein:
If it was from too much protein that they grow to quickly and they get lag problems with the extra weight gain. He is on turkey starter crumbles and has always been, i was giving him 1 boiled egg yolk per day, but now have stopped the egg and for treat he only gets lettuce (which has no protein).

3) Splayed leg:
For the first two weeks he was kept in a glass tank with lucerne chaff (horse food) on the bottom, and I didnt relize but he was slipping on it so it could be a splayed leg. Now i have changed the bedding to hay which he can grip on. The problem is i treid the hobble method but his leg is fine untill it reaches the knee then it just twists outward, so as much as i hobbled him it didnt work as the leg twists out so the hobble just pulled his knee into his other leg.

He is fine in himself and is eating and drinking alot, btu the leg issue is annoying me more then him.

That is all the info i have gathered and assessed so far but i havea new problem it seems that he could have a TWISTED TIBIA?? Has anyone had this problem/ found a solution, i relize if he as this problem i cantr use him for breeding but thas ine he is only as a pet anyways!?!
