Peacock emergency

Thanks Kathy, I did. I had to take advantage of the hubby being available to hold him, thus the rush. Fecal today came up negative for coccidia and worms. Vet recommended fenbendazol anyway, at 50 mg/kg so 2.25 per day for 5 days. He likes the mashed up egg and looks SO much better, I am thrilled beyond words. Will do 5 days of antibiotic and dewormer and set him free.

I am so happy to hear your boy is doing better, I must say you really took care of him when needed. Most folks would not have done what you did, especially with company coming, etc.
kudos to you!

I agree, good job. I am a little confused as to what the ailment was. The fecal exam should have shown something in the stool sample unless it was just a bacterial infection, sour crop or something like that.

Hello, lousy schedule for having a sick bird. I spent the day doing the tourist thing with the in-laws and getting animals settled tonight. I am also curious as to my Bird’s ailment and reread the post about the peahen. There do seem to be similarities. I wish I could post the video of him the day this began. He was flopping uncontrollably in the tree.

I am not so sure that we are out of the woods. He ate almost half a hardboiled egg yesterday but didn’t eat or drink much of anything at all today. It was hot- in the eighties. I know I have thrown his schedule way off kilter with the company, giving him 120 mls of pediolyte at 10 am and again at 10 pm today instead of every 6 hours as he had been getting. I hope the next few days are better time-wise. Is it possible he might not start drinking on his own with frequent tubings?

Kathy asked what his poo looks like and it is watery clear-to-white with small amounts of greenish lumps in it. It looks like I should tube feed him Kaytee Baby Bird Food but it will be several days before I can get to town for that (an hour away) Is there a homemade substitute? What about pureeing boiled eggs and making a slurry to tube?

It does sound like he needs sustenance. I have never tube fed, so I don't know but watery clear poop means he is not getting enough food. I don't think he would stop drinking just because you were tubing. I think he would eat/drink if he felt up to it. Doesn't sound like he is up to it so you need to keep up what you can do. If you can't get Kaytee, he needs something. I don't want to steer you wrong but I think a slurry as u mentioned would be ok, whatever u can get in him for sustenance that's easy on him. Kathy correct me if I am wrong here.

Now for cocci most folks use Corid also called Aprolium. Kathy will be able to tell you more on that. Cocci can overwhelm their systems if they already don't feel well from something else. :(

The vet tested his stool negative for coccidia & worm eggs. Per Kathy's link I will rerun the test whenever I can get a decent sample, but they are very watery and run into the straw. Do I understand that if it is blackhead the poop will be bright yellow-colored? I have 250 mg metronidazole tablets on hand, Kathy should I add these to the mix and how? I am going to weigh him again in a few minutes but he was 10 lbs. to start.
