Peacock emergency

You can put a paper plate under him to catch a stool sample. Yes puree him some regular crumbles and egg so it will pass through the syringe. Practice the slurry before trying to tube to make sure it will pass through. Egg does not have to be boiled, it can be raw. Be warned that the yolk will make his stool yellow like he has blackhead.

Remember the gal that had the false negative and then three days later a different vet found coccidia and capillry worms?

The last 3 pups i purchased had a fecal done the day before i picked them up and were said to be worm free, but i wormed them anyhow a few days after i got them and guess what they were full of tape worm larvae

I no longer rely on vet fecal i just worm everything no matter what the vet says just sayen

This is why it's so important to look at the whole picture. In this case, and with the spalding, both had negative fecals, but both were sick. In this thread the vet looked at the whole picture and suggested worming just in case, which is what most vets will do because they understand that one negative fecal means nothing.

Not all vets, or lab techs, are created equal. Stool sample collection is also a major factor.
You are so right! I've seen posts from supposed "vet techs" here, and it worries me to think that one like them might be responsible for doing my fecals, lol. Many vets don't do in house floats, so that also concerns me. Bottom line, if a bird is stable, I can see no downside to worming them with a wormer like Safeguard. -Kathy

Corid is one I don't have. Does the metronidazole dissolve in the fluids if I grind it up? He has been relatively calm in confinement but is noticeably more agitated today and wants out NOW! I about freaked this morning to see bright yellow chunks in his cage until I discovered he had tossed all the boiled egg yolk and walnuts out. He likes to get under my birdfeeders to clean up so I offered him wild birdseed and he is actually picking at that now. Is that a no-no? He weighs 9-10 lbs today.

You could give him the pill whole or you could give it when you tube, either way will work. If he'll eat the seed, great, but iff you see undigested seed in his poop, then stop feeding it to him. His agitation is a good sign, but loss of one pound is a bad sign. See what you can do to get some ground up, mushed up pellets, crumbles, eggs, whatever... or maye even some infant baby food into him until you can get some Kaytee.

Update on The Bird: He is picking at food and I think our poops are good, do y’all agree? I am taking this sample to the vet clinic for a check.

He looks/acts good and is honking at noises.

Today is Day 7 on pedialyte (120mls twice/day), Day 6 on enrofloxacin and Day 5 on Safeguard. I have to work all day tomorrow and won’t get home till after dark so my plan if the poo sample checks clean is to stop everything after this evening’s dose, keep him confined tomorrow and set him free Sunday morning.

I hope he still likes me and his roosting tree at our house after this treatment!

I’d like to hear your comments and then have one more question. I have wracked my brain to think of anything he could have gotten into to make him so sick. Since he is free-roaming I don’t know about everything. The only change I have made here is to replace the mineral mix used in our sheep feed about a month ago, and here is the label for that.

He does help himself at the feed trough so does anyone see anything here he should not be exposed to? This product is mixed with white agricultural salt intended for livestock and has similar ingredients to the previous product we used. Remember his initial symptoms were: acting off by staying in a tree late in the day, not holding his head up- drooping head, flopping around on a branch in the tree like he was convulsing, and finally falling or coming out of the tree and laying in a puddle letting me catch him. He has not had any of this feed or mineral for the week he has been recovering.
