Peacock limping with swollen leg joint

Birds leg bones heal very quick, if not a compound break it can heal in about two or three weeks. I have casted two peahens legs and if it is not badly broken I would not put her through it. He might only be sprained, it is common for birds to sprain a leg joint. I would catch him and inspect the leg closely before spending a lot of money at the vet. I guess I somewhat side with dad. We already examined the leg and didn’t see/feel any breaks. The only thing swollen is the joint. We are hoping it’s just a sprain.

The avian dose is minuscule, max is about 0.227 mg per pound of body weight. How much does he weigh?
He weighs about 10lbs. I did some research and what I read says not to use meloxicam with dexamethasone. Since we started treating with dexamethasone I think it’s best not to add in meloxicam. I don’t want to add any other problems for him. Thanks so much for your help though, I appreciate it. Now, I know I can use meloxicam on my birds.

I doubt that there would be any problem giving aspirin, our vet told us to use childrens liquid @ 0.50ml for an adult peahen twice per day when she broke her leg.

I took him to the vet today as he hasn’t made much improvement with his leg and I was worried about him. She figures it’s just soft tissue damage. Under his feathers above the joint we could see bruising. She didn’t feel an x-ray was needed. She also explained that dexamethasone was the right treatment for the head injury as it treats nerve pain, but for the leg metacam was the recommended treatment as it’s for soft tissue pain so you guys were right. I guess I should of gave it to him sooner. He should heal up and be fine, I feel relieved.

That is good news indeed, and thank you too.

Last night my peacock was unable to walk or stand. The scrape on his head was also opened up again. We went to the vet today and seen they dr. I usually see with my birds. Unfortunately he didn’t seem to really know what was wrong with him. The wound on his head was opened up due to the other birds in the building pecking him so we have him completely separate now. He thinks it could be neurological and treated him with depo-medrol. He also prescribed baytril so he doesn’t get an infection on his head. Also, derma gel spray for his head. I don’t know what caused him from going to limping to not walking now. Hopefully he gets better, he’s very alert.
