Peacock not behaving normally

Great news for my sick pea, he has almost fully recovered, and is eating like a champ. back to 7-9 grapes lots of corn and his favorite cat food, he's even eating some of the weeds I throw in for them. he just hasn't gotten his flying strength back to normal yet. he can't quite get up to the 5ft high perch yet. he's also spending time preening more too.

the other is on day4 of his safeguard and doing well too.

How much safeguard should I keep in reserve for emergencies? I guess 5 days for 2 birds?

thanks Kathy and everyone who help here

Glad he's getting better! You can get a 125ml bottle of Safeguard for goats and that will last a very long time.

Hello again,
Back again for some good advice.
This same Peacock is looking sick again this week. I noticed over the weekend that he wasn't eating quite up to normal. One thing I did find he would eat were some green weeds that were starting to grow that I grabbed a handful and threw it for them.
Last night I noticed he didn't fly up to roost and spent the night on the ground.

After this episode, in Oct, about 6 weeks later, just before Christmas he went this way again. I gave him the Safeguard liquid for 5 days straight into his mouth. I gave him 1.2-1.3ml every day and buy the 5th day he was feeling better and later recovered 100%.

So again, 6-7weeks later he's back with the weekend behavior.
My other male has shown no signs of any weekend behavior and for the last 10 days or so, gives me his full feather strut almost every time I go out there.
My sick male I have noticed, often is pecking/eating the poop on the ground from the night before. I haven't noticed the healthy one doing that, so I don't know if that is one of the causes.

I know I can give him more Safeguard 1.8-2.0ml without concern, but would this work, to give him more than his weight prescribes?
Could the worms just be mostly killed off and 6-7 weeks is what it takes for them to make a full comeback?

thanks

During some stages of the worms life cycle the Safeguard cannot kill them. It is always advised to repeat your worming after 10 days this will get any worms that survived the first time around. Eating the droppings is not normal for an adult bird, it would certainly explain how he would keep re-infecting himself. Good luck and keep us posted.

Ok, great that's what I was thinking, not doing a complete kill of the worms.

So, do 5 more days of safeguard 10 days after the last day of the first five doses?

I believe the 5 days in a row dose is what you need to kill capillary worms, and yes, I think it needs to be repeated after 10 days. But I'd feel better if @casportpony would back me up on this, I don't want to advise you to give too much.

You worm for 5 days, skip 10 days, and then worm for another 5 days.

You need to rotate which wormer you use.

That too. Remember to alternate worming agents from year to year.

I agree, eating droppings is not normal and definitely not good. Please dont take this as a jab at how you take care of your birds having said that, usually when they eat their droppings there is a deficiency in their diet such as missing nutrients and they eat the droppings to try and replace whats missing. A good example is when dogs eat their poo its normally not a behavior issue but a diet issue and then it becomes habit and peas are no different. Sometimes we have to work on our offense instead of playing defense. I hope this helps and please keep us posted as you can tell we are concerned.

If there were to be eggs in the feces the worming agent won't have any affect. That's why we do the 10 day gap and then worm again that way the parasite eggs have hatched and vulnerable. Can you please post a picture of the nutrition tag of the feed you use? That way some of us can give our opinions on it. I know parasites can absorb the nutrients out of them which makes things difficult.
