I’m looking into putting up a building to expand my peafowl breeding project in the next year or so. My first idea was to make a 10’x30’ shelter divided into 3 10x10 pens with 20-30’ runs attached.

After discussing with my gf we shifted the idea into making the building larger, I was baffled that she said go bigger.

The revised plan was to double side the building making 3 10x10 pens on each side with an aisle down the center. Inside the aisle we would have a door and vertical sliding window for each pen to allow easy access and some ventilation, and also use it for feed storage.

Has anyone built anything similar to this, and did you build it yourself or have a building company construct it? I have a lot of time to research and shop around before we actually build so I’d like to consider every possibility, not to mention focus on cost savings as well. Any help is much appreciated.

The building in the front is 24x48 and divided into eight 12x12 coops each with a 12x48 run with covered perches. This building is intended for Greens and very High % Spauldings so it is insulated and heated.

I’ve seen pictures of your set up before and I love it. Obviously we aren’t going as big but the concept is very similar. We just won’t have an insulated building as we won’t be getting any Spauldings.

It looks like you have half of the open end enclosed, I was goin to leave that open. Is that a bad idea?

Only 15 of the coops and runs have enclosed coops, all the rest have open or partially open coops. Protection from the predominant winter winds is necessary here. Blues can take very frigid weather down into the negative temps but they should have windbreak and a place to get out of the elements.

I’m thinking a 30’ long X 32’ wide will be perfect. 3 10x10 pens on each side, with 10x24 runs leaving half the side facing the run enclosed to help block weather. And a 12’ aisle that can be used for feed and equipment equipment storage. What height would you recommend? I was thinking either 8 or 10 ft ceilings.
