Peafowl for 2013

Thought I was going to get five live chicks, but the smallest one looked like it lost too much moisture and was probably already shrink wrapped when it pipped. I candle it when it piped and there was a huge air cell, but I could still see lots of veining around the chick, so I left it alone for 28 hours. When I opened the very small pip I could see that the chick was shrink wrapped and there was still lots of blood, so I put a small amount of saline on the membrane, drained off the excess and put it back under mama. When I checked it two hours later, it was dead. Of course I had to inspect it and it had not absorbed it's yolk.

Good news is that the other four that hatched yesterday and this morning are fine.

Sorry to hear about the baby you lost. Congrats on the others. :thumbsup

So, I have a total of 4 pea eggs and will throw in who knows how many guinea eggs to make a full batch for the incubator. I have been observing a nest of guinea eggs continue to grow since this weekend but I didn't bother it. I will steal some eggs from the pile and put them with the pea eggs. I guess the girls are on another cycle/strike.:/

Thanks... Of course the one that died was the one that had white flight feathers.

Oh NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, you still have time for your girls to lay more eggs. Perhaps you will hatch another one like that.

It's funny, all of the chicks from last year had white flights, but this year only one of nine had them...

How are your chicks doing?

Here are some of the new chicks under their Mama, the house Cochin who has been de-wormed and prophylactically treated for histomoniais.

My chicks are doing great. I wanted to take pics last night but was too tired after coming in from bottle feeding the 2 lamb. I will try to take pics and post tomorrow. I still can't believe ALL 3 of them will be white. I hope I don't get all whites every year. :gig

I now have five chicks, had to help the fifth one out, was shrink wrapped. I didn't notice a kink in the water top off hose and my water pan went dry, humidity had dropped to 25%!!!! This morning noticed kink and added hot water to get humidity back up. Removed small amount of the shell, wet the membranes with hot water and wrapped in warm wet paper towel. Came in at lunch and finished getting the chick out, had absorbed all of the yolk and looks good. So now have 5 new little pieds, no pipping on the other eggs. Hope the humidity drop didn't hurt the nonpipped eggs! They are on day 27 today, so still hopeful for some more to hatch. Will get a pic later and post.
