Peafowl for 2013

I had a rough season this year. I actually had a worse hatch rate this year than my last 2. This is due to my beloved old Marsh bator breaking. That old incubator was so reliable that it could **** near hatch a rock if I put it in there. I miss it and will be getting a Lyon as soon as I can. Hopefully the new company Lyon makes them as good as Marsh did before they bought them out.

I used to get about 90% hatch rate but this year was more like 50%. For the first month or so I was using a homemade incubator which had too many hot and cold spots so ended up only hatching a few. Money was a bit tight so I had to settle for a Hovabator Genesis as a replacement. It is awesome at holding temp and humidity but the hatch rate just isn't what it was with my Marsh.

I want to thank you guys for posting all your advise and update stories. I lurk a good bit more than I actually post and it always makes things better being able to see that there are other peafowl enthusiasts that know the joys and trials of peafowl. This community has helped me learn sooo much about peafowl and my peas are much better off for it. I came here a few years ago knowing absolutely nothing and anytime I had a question you guys were always willing to help out with advise. And did I mention I looove all the awesome pictures you all post?

Just candled the last 10 eggs that I put under hens and it looks like there are 7 viable, but 5 have just started, so I could still lose more.

Zaz, doing an experiment just for you, lol, I set a few in the evening to see what time of day they hatch!

I guess the 2013 egg laying season is done, no eggs in the last five or six days! So including the eggs I know of that were laid from the perch, the three hens laid a total of 86 eggs this season.

Kathy, you should re-word that. You "hope" that laying season is over. :lau

Don't total anything just yet. More are coming. :gig

I thought after a 4 or 5 days, the girls were done. Guess what??????? I FOUND ANOTHER EGG YESTERDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lau

So, besides the eggs in the incubator that go on lock down next weekend, I had to put 6 eggs under a broody hen and hope that she doesn't play musical nesting boxes. :barnie

Laying season will be over when laying season is over. :/ I gave up hope a long time ago. :hit

Non-texans don't realize that there is real truth in everything is bigger in Texas, including how far it is just to cross or partially cross our state :). I want to add a white peahen but are to busy to drive to far right now. Also not in a huge hurry, just want it settled in before next breeding season.
my daughter works in the oil fields and travels all over perhaps if she is coming your way she can bring you one if you are interested at that time, I can send a baby, a yearling or a hen that just turned 2 but layed a couple cluches this year and I hatched them out.
If I had that many peas, I would die. That is too many for me to handle. :th

Is it normal for them to lay this long? Mine stopped end of July, But that is because she is sitting on the nest I guess.
