I think I have a hen from last years hatch laying up in the loft of the barn, gotta get up there and see , she been coming down from up there justa honken

for the last week.

Yep DH was up there today , came down and told me there is at least a dozen pea eggs up there

must have a couple whites laying right now, oh well at least they are safe up there

I hope one isn't the white that I'm buying!! I'm so glad I'm not getting pea eggs right now. I'm staying busy enough with my quail and chickens. AND it's hunting season!!

No it is yearling from last years hatch.

I was told years ago that it was rare that yearlings lay but every yearling I have has layed and they are from 4 different bloodlines so mabe it has something to do with free ranging as minxfox mentioned one time. I have another yearling that has a bigger train than most of my 2 year olds

I love your avatar. I went to your profile to look at the large photo. I bet that was hard work getting that big rock in the pen! I have two stumps in my pen for the birds to perch on but one is starting to rot. I always thought it would be nice to have a big rock in the pen.

Yep I still think it has to do with them free-ranging especially since you said they visit the pond and catch frogs and little fish to eat. I have seen my birds get caterpillars that fall into the pen and eat a lizard that was on the fence but when they have so much space to roam and especially an environment like your place with grassy fields, a pond, and some woods, they can find stuff like that to eat far more than a penned bird. Nothing beats the variety and nutrition of all the wild plants and small critters your birds get to munch on. I love your setup so much Zaz. Also you have a lot of birds but you can't tell because you are still so excited about all of your birds. Sometimes I feel like the people who eventually have tons of birds no longer enjoy them that much and don't even want to talk about them much to others.

Guess what? My stupid 4 year old hen laid another egg! Good Lord, I think that brings her total to something like 35 eggs this year, probably more (96 eggs from three hens, but one of the hens didn't lay more than 15-20)!

My last chick to hatch hatched one month ago and I can't believe how little it still is... Need to weigh it today and see how it compares to the others.
