Peafowl With Butt Wound

Two cocks in one pen can fight to death .When the temperature of the air increases they can catch an moment of madness. A male can kill a female when he is excited by another male and can 't commit a fight (in another pen - it can see but not touch him).

So you are saying that sometimes when two cocks can see each other and can not get to each other, they will take the fight to the hen they are with and hurt/kill her? Glad I am putting tin around all my pens.

Sight barriers help. The breeder I got Dragon from had a penned green peacock (which passed away last year) and he had a free-range black shoulder peacock. They would fence fight. The green peacock would hurt his feet fence fighting, and so he would walk really funny because he hurt his feet. So even having males separated you can have fighting if you don't have a barrier.

Today Peep's wound looked really good. It wasn't red like it was the first day I saw it. I got a better look at it and it does look a bit deeper than I thought, but it isn't red or bloody looking so I would say no one is picking on it and he is healing.

I was petting Peep today after I put food out all over the pen. Alto was busy eating, but when he saw me giving Peep attention, he walked up and Peep of course stopped letting me pet him so he could keep an eye on Alto. Alto got up close to me and looked at me, but of course he doesn't ask to be pet, he just likes to interrupt. So he started walking to Peep and Peep and Alto walked slowly in circles around me. So then I got up and walked up to Alto to make him back up. Then Peep started walking off so I followed Peep keeping me in between Peep and Alto. Eventually Peep started running with Alto following him and Peep ran into the dog box. Alto flew up on the perch next to the dog box, stood there for a minute, then walked off to go eat. Once he was busy eating I let Peep out of the dog box and he cautiously walked out and when Alto saw him, he just went back to eating.

I have come to the conclusion that Alto does not like Peep displaying for me and he does not like it when Peep gets lots of attention from me such as me petting him. The displaying and petting seem to make Alto want to chase after Peep. I don't know if Alto sees me as part of the flock and thus I am his and so Peep cannot spend time with me or display for me? Or if Alto is jealous - I know dogs get jealous of other dogs so I am not sure if it happens with peafowl.
Anyways I have noticed a direct correlation with Peep displaying for me specifically - like I walk up and no other peahens are around, and he starts displaying and wants to chase me. This makes Alto mad and he comes running to make Peep stop. The petting thing I no longer think Alto is just being curious to see what is going on. I think he doesn't like Peep getting the attention. I like to compare peafowl flocks to a wolf pack, and I once saw a great wolf documentary about some people raised wolves that were released into a big fenced in area to live semi wild. If the Alpha male saw the people giving the low ranking male attention, the low ranking male would be punished for getting attention. I think that is what is going on here.

I will have to remember to make Peep get onto a stump or a perch so that I can pet him without Alto chasing him. As far as displaying for me, I like it when he does that, but I will just make sure I don't get him into trouble with Alto.
