Peahens doing well

Thanks for all the help re: my peahens having respiratory infection. I purchased the Baytril and administered it orally, they finally started to show improvement on day 7 after having brought them into the house.

I am so happy to hear that they are doing better! Wow, seven days before improvement, must be a really nasty bacterial infection, I've never had to give it to a bird or longer than 5 days.

Side effects

• Birds' systems may be particularly vulnerable to infections from bacteria that isn't vulnerable to Baytril, or yeast infections after being dosed with Baytril. To minimize the risk, try to maintain sanitary conditions & to give Baytril for the minimum time needed to be fully effective. You may need to follow up with antibiotic or anti-fungal medicine if problems develop afterward.
• Like other antibiotics, Baytril may make birds more vulnerable to yeast infections or infections from bacteria that aren't vulnerable to Baytril, particularly if Baytril is given for a longer time. Because it is very powerful, Baytril can kill off significant numbers of "good bacteria" that normally fight harmful organisms in birds' digestive tracts. To minimize the risk:
  • Try to maintain sanitary conditions.
  • Give Baytril for the minimum time needed to be fully effective.
  • Give birds' probiotics, such as unflavored yogurt, buttermilk, or a probiotic supplement to re-establish good bacteria. You could try feeding probiotics halfway between Baytril dosings to try to fight the growth of bad bacteria during treatment (though the probiotics will be killed off at the next Baytril dosing), &/or give probiotics after finishing all Baytril dosings.
  • You may need to follow up with a different antibiotic if new bacterial problems develop after Baytril treatments.
  • If a fungal condition develops, it may be necessary to give an antifungal such as Nystatin, or you might try Oxine if timed to not conflict too much with probiotics. Raw, unfiltered cider vinegar has anti-fungal properties & may help, as well (but do NOT combine it with Oxine as the acid might hazardously activate Oxine).
• Baytril may have some negative effects on the development of young birds.
• There are conflicting reports about whether Baytril has negative side effects on a chicken's kidneys, the liver or blood.

I have probiotic powder. I was going to wait but will start putting probiotic in their feed now. For some reason, it came to me to mix wet cat food into their seed mix and they ate extremely well throughout their illness. Maybe this tip can help someone else having difficulty with getting their peacocks to eat if ill. Thank all for their comments and support. Before joining this site, I would have had to watch helplessly as my birds passed. I am extremely grateful and will be sure to keep in contact.I kept whining to my husband I needed a cement bottom shed to house my birds at night because we have so may natural predators here. He turns around yesterday and tells me I can have the whole pole barn, all 48' x 24' and 12' high for my birds. Its just a roofed structure right now, but I am so thrilled, I don't even know where to begin...I know I will be having birds well into retirement now. How blessed am I!
