peanut allergies in schools

Well its not like we had a whole class on religion, we just recited the Lords prayer every morning. That I wouldnt count as someone ramming religion down a kids throat

to me yes it is... I will not get into a religion debate BUT what I am saying is that we need to RESPECT each other differences and not FORCE our on beliefs on others.

ETA: we had a principal who required ALL classes to have 20 minutes of bible read time at the beginning to each day. (this was in the early 80's)

well thats definantly a bit over the top, I am Christian and I even would have trouble sitting through that

Its only cause it had "God" in it...so they decided they didnt need to say it.

Now, Elayna mentioned that they did say it this yr..but she's a 7 yr old..I dont know
lol...

I'll ask her teacher this sunday @ church...she'll tell me! LOL

but last yr...yep...they didnt say it..

I happen to know a child w/peanut allergys. Her father opened a reese's inside the houseand that was enough to send the child into a reaction so I understand the hand washing and rinsing.

That being said I also agree with Royd, something is causing all these allergies/ lactose intolerance/asthma. While we are at it seems like ADD/AHD and learning disabilities are on the rise.
I personally wonder if its our eating habits. Growing up McDonalds was a very rare treat today it is standard dinner for some. Food and even milk was purer. Meals and desserts where made from scratch and mom did not use high fructose corn syrup, genetically modified food and the milk was not stripped of all the enzymes. There was not microwave meals because microwaves where over $500 to buy. By the mid 80's fast food, processed snacks and microwaves became popular. There is 6 years between my brother and I. He grew up more in the start of the processed food . He has allergies his daughter does too. My sister who is a heavy processed food eater has 3 kids all had learning disabilities and a lot of ear infections upper respiratory infections. I do not eat a lot of processed foods and did not feed my son them .He has never had allergies or ear infections/upper respiratory infections(and I smoked)

I could probably write a book on this subject...but I won't...

Times have sure changed, children no longer go out and get dirty and nasty( jeez, when I was a kid we would crush Ice Plant flowers and make the new kid eat them...I know....hazing....dam we could have killed someone!). TV dinners were a treat for us(they had to be baked in the oven for 40 minutes), now they are a staple, Micky D's was non existent in my childhood(don't know if there just wasn't any or my mother refused to let us eat junk), now it is a staple also. All the processed foods out there...have you read the ingredients...do you know what they are? YUCK!

And then we have the sterile thing going on, what is it with all this hand sanitizer and antibacterial stuff....hell we would be out playing in the dirt...pee behind a tree then eat our sandwich with our grubby hands............and we are still ALIVE...can you believe it!

With all our infinite wisdom we have steadily produced a weak population.....allergies...obesity....

And to think everyone was just concerned about smoking..... We need to look at everything we are doing to ourselves...

In terms of science, I think all these things are basically weeding out the weak....survival of the fittest.

OK, no hate mail please....just my opinion.

edited to add.....did I mention.....pretending to be a dog and drinking out of mud puddles

I for one am still in school. We used to say the Lord's prayer every morning when we sang O'Canada. Then one family moved in who didn't like that and we can't say it anymore. A school of 400 kids in favor of saying it, and one thats not. Where's the sense in that?
hu.gif

it only makes no sense to you as long as your in the majority, it makes sense if you are the minority being told what religion to pray to

Apparently, you don't have a problem with tyrrany, because that's exactly what it is....Some mother comes in to school with her precious little child, and suddenly, the majority can't eat this, can't do that activity, can't play a roughhouse game, on the playground...The next thing you know, talent shows and school plays are out the window, because the mom demands that her kid be put front and center, when, at best, he should be sitting on the end of the junior varsity bench, or maybe be the towel boy.

Sort of like giving out Nobel Peace prizes to people who think a world without war would be an excellent idea.

This topic was mentioned on another message board and the other reasons for the protests where put down

1. Clorox wipes being approved by the school system to be used on their children’s faces and hands. None of the parents think that the teachers actually did this. However, the school system has no right to approve that to be used on children. They have chemicals in them and even say on the boxes warnings of such.

NO Parent would have issues with Clorox being used to clean tables ect. But, not on kids. I am certain all parents can see and understand this.

2. All of the parents agree that Hand washing is important and have NO issues with multiple times a day to wash hands. That is important and should be something that is done more in school no doubt.

3. All Parents agree that some reasonable changes to protect the child or children in question is necessary. everyone agrees children should be kept safe.

4. All feel for the parents with the allergy stricken child or children and they want it to be clear that this is NOT an attack on them and or their children.

5. All parents feel that they need to be educated more on this subject.

6. Parents that are picketing are looking for a solution that fits everyone. They are looking for a better way to keep all of the children safe including the children with the allergies. They are looking to be more informed, be more involved. They love all of the kids and feel that the school and the children that go there are a family.

we need to all talk more they say.

7. there is an autistic child who was told by someone else (not by her own mother) that if she goes to the lunch room and eats a PB&J she will kill the child with the peanut allergy. both of these children are classmates. Don't you think the mother has the right to decide if she wants her child to have that kind of weight put on her child. These are children who are only in first grade. That parent feels that is a lot to put on a child.

that same autistic child brought in Peanut free Suckers to the school with her valentines cards. she was told she could not give her valentines out and sat and watch everyone else share their valentines cards. this same child thought she did something wrong. The school sent her suckers and her cards back home to her parent. any small change for this child is hard. That was a tough afternoon for that family from what was shared.

8. rinsing mouths out. what good does this really do? Not that water in the mouth is an issue but, are 6 year olds who put water in their mouths for a second really getting ALL of the peanut butter residue out? What happens if they don't and they do sit next to the child with the peanut allergy. some parents say that their kids rub food on their arms and clothing, what about that? is this a false sense of security? I would want my child safe and really is this what is making it safe for all involved.

and what happens if it's not enough. said child does get touched by peanut butter partials in the classroom? what happens if she dies in front of all of the kids because someone didn't do enough and then all of the children wonder if they killed her, because of what they were told?

*said child with said allergy doesn't have to do the same procedure as the other children. why not? some parents and other adults who have gone into said child’s classroom are not doing the process either said one parent. How is this making it any safer when no one is on the same page?

9. Children who bring their lunches to school. their lunches sit outside on a cart. Outside (not in a hall but, outside) then once the carts are retrieved which could take as long as 30 minutes it's taken to the lunchroom where it sits unattended.

said child’s lunch goes inside the building in her classroom.

* I think some procedures just need to be adjusted so parents know their kids lunches are not spoiling.

Said child has been seen at chuck e cheeses, Disney world and out trick or treating and in none of those environments does it seem there is additional precautions. which raises questions, how allergic is she really if she is able to go to these places? most of these places cook with peanut oil and you know chuckecheeses has to be covered in it. some parents ask.

10. Parents are NO LONGER able to volunteer in the school in their children's classes anymore because, of said child’s illness. some parents want to be involved at the school and last year they were however, this year they are told they are not allowed to due to this.

11. The school is NOT Peanut free. They have peanut free zones in the school but, the lunchroom is not peanut free.

12. Parents that are protesting All talked to the school, the district, Tallahassee and so on before they took this to protest. All were looking for common ground. They were not getting any answers.

Nothing was really being done so they are now getting everyone talking to come up with a better resolution for all.

Parents all have one goal in common here is to Keep ALL of the kids safe & Happy. Their kids have rights too. And a lot of these same parents believe their children’s rights were violated during all of this.

13. Procedures are taking as long as 30 minutes out of their children’s education.
Yes, education is important and 30 minutes can be a whole subject. these same parents say again, they are not upset about the hand washing. If anything Hand washing is important!!!

But, if you take time away from their education you need to make it up somewhere else?
Myself as a parent I don't mind having 30 minutes added to their schedules.
our kids are only going to school from 8-2 four days a week and 8-1 one day every week.
I don't remember getting that much time off from school. so taking an additional 30 minutes out of their day every day can be a big deal in some parents minds.

Some are concerned that once they are in higher grades that have FCAT wonder if the 30 additional minutes lost every day throughout their whole school lives will affect them. What happens when a child Fails Fcats, and they don’t pass the grade they are in? who is going to be responsible for that?

13. There is no real policy that covers all of this concerning the peanut allergy ect.
Making up as they go along isn't the answer and it's confusing everyone involved. All of the parents in the schools need to learn more about the allergy and what to do to help protect the children.

doing it half azz is not the way to go if you have a child with a serious allergy that can kill her. There are kids who are allergic to soaps and by their parents not being informed about the policy changes, then you have other kids affected by their illnesses too here. so how is it that those kids rights are not important here?

14. There was a peanut sniffing dog that was brought into the school on Friday. where was the notice concerning that? who is paying for all of that? Why are you bringing a dog into the school if said child hasn’t had continued allergic reactions while in the school?

One parent said I could understand if they had to bring in the dog in her classroom to see why she was having so many allergic reactions but, if she has been fine why does this have to be done? One parent said My child is allergic to dogs and now a dog is going to be in my child’s classroom. Will the classroom be adequately cleaned so my child is safe too?

one parent asked who is paying for the replacements of the items they found are with peanut residue on them? Tax payers? budget cuts and money is already a problem in the schools. Who paid for the cleaning crew that is supposed to be brought out after the dogs? How about the dogs time, I know that can’t all be free. Tax payers?

15. Parents are concerned that if there isn't a real policy put in place that protects ALL Of the kids rights that the request each year will become more outlandish. > these children will be together throughout their lives in school. so how do we all make this safe and reasonable for all involved? How do we make sure our children’s rights are not being Violated with new policies and procedures being put in place without our knowledge.

*The only way is for ALL parents being involved!

16. Class parties: while to some this seems silly to be worried about class parties when a child’s health is at risk. But, the reasons behind this concern is: Class parties are In schools. And it’s hard for children in some classes to see that other classes are having these parties and their class is not allowed to.
These same children think they are being punished. Parents were not allowed to send in any snacks or treats for these parties in these grades. All other grades get parties, treats and snacks. Fact is it does need to be fair if other classes have these parties. There are ways to allow for these parties and still include the children with the allergies.

*Everyone isn’t on the same page and the kids are the ones that are affected. While we are adults and can make sure that our children have the full school experience. And who says school parties have to be all about junk food. I am a mom that Loves to feed her kids fruits!

There are ways to allow these kids to have parties. Approved food lists, approved by the parents, Parents send in money for the peanut child’s parents to purchase things that are safe and all the kids are happy.
But, to have no parties when the rest of the school does I do not agree. I think it should be fair for all of the kids. Having children missing out and feeling like they are doing something wrong isn’t right said another parent.

17. Snack time in lower grade classes. I remember going to school and always having snack time.
Children in kindergarten and first grades should have snack time. Actually, I believe they need it. They are growing kids. Some of these lower grade classes are the last to go to lunch. Because, No snacks are allowed at school for those classes some of the children are starving by the time they go to lunch. Can you learn on an empty stomach? I know I can’t.

I tried to send a banana with my daughter one day and she said MOM I am not allowed to have it.

18. Clinic: The clinic is for the kids when they are sick and injured. Some parents have found out that if said child with peanut allergy comes to the clinic all of the sick kids get shuffled out of there. If said peanut child comes to the clinic it doesn't matter what sick kid is in there and or how badly they are sick or injured the said child with the Peanut allergy ALWAYS TAKES PRIORITY!

she goes into the clinic to call her mom many times in a day and puts the other sick children out. If a child is really sick or injured and even if said child with peanut allergy isn't having a shock of any kind these kids are seondary and not made a priority themselves. How is this fair to the other kids? what ever happened to Triage and the person who needs the attention most should get it.

I want to know my kids are getting the attention they need if they need it in the clinic. Don't you?

These are just some of the reasons of why the protest is happening. These parents are not trying to Upset anyone. They are trying to bring about change that is Good and safe for ALL of the kids and staff at the school. They are protecting their children and their children’s rights. They are protecting the parents’ rights to know what is going on in their schools. I don’t think anyone should be faulting them for that!

I know this is Upsetting to some but, these parents are trying to look at both sides. That’s what I see & hear them saying. They want a change that will be good for EVERYONE involved.

Sometimes, the only way change can come about is to get educated, talk to one another and be involved. I commend these parents for doing just that! They are at least trying to do that.

Here's the irony on that subject. It is demanded that evolution be taught, pretty much as a fact, even though they call it a theory. Yet, they fight the process of evolution, tooth and nail, when it comes to their personal lives.......Hey, you! Outta the gene pool!
