Hi all. I have 3 hens which I feed Purina Layena and BOSS. I used to provide oyster shell, but they didn't seem to be eating much of it and the container got knocked over several time. Well, another urban chicken buddy of mine told me she just feeds their eggs shells back to her hens. I've been doing the same and their eggs seem find. Is this okay to continue on a long term basis?

Also, my neighbor just stopped by and gave me some wild critter feed. It contains BOSS, corn, peanuts (still in the shell). Are peanuts safe for hens? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

I don't know about the peanuts, but I do feed eggshells back to my girls. It's a good source of calcium and also good for the gizzard to grind up food. I don't have to buy oyster shell separately this way. Just crunch em up fine with a rolling pin.

Mine have eaten shelled raw peanuts before no problem. Don't know about the shell.

Thanks for the replies, especially regarding the peanuts. Guess my girls are safe.

I have heard the if you feed your hens egg shells for to long it could cause them to start eating their own eggs. I hope this helps
