When we moved to our place, the 3 apple trees were so overgrown that it was like a thick hedge - only 20' tall! Not a lot of apples on the trees at all. We removed the center apple tree completely and the branches from the other 2 were still crossing, crazy!
We trimmed hard the first year, trimmed some every year since. The apples are a very early apple, ripe on the second week of September and do not store well at all. I make applesauce out of them and a friend is taking some for making apple cider.
It is amazing how much a trimming a fruit tree can help in production. I bet the trees were so thick with branches that the bees couldn't even get through to pollinate, lol.
