Pecked rooster. When to introduce to hens?

I picked up a 1-2 year old rooster from a farm that was overrun with roosters and he got pecked by the others. I attached a photo showing the damage, his skin is pink/red and clearly exposed. He has been in a wire crate inside my coop with my six hens for 24 hours now. Do I need to wait until his feathers grow back to let him out with my hens? I want to let him out and keep a close eye to see if the hens are okay with him but I am obviously concerned they will just end up pecking him too. Thanks for any insight.

First of all you want to quarantine new birds. That roo could be a carrier for disease(s) that your hens may be susceptible to. I would have waited to put him with the hens. If you're going to integrate straight away, though, you will want to do the see-but-no-touch thing for a while yet before introducing them where they can interact physically. Then, it's a matter of the nature of all the birds involved. No telling what could happen! Hopefully, he will blossom into a confident dude but stay sweet (buff orp right?) and your hennies will love him.

He will hopefully be a nice boy! I suspect he will be, which is why the other roos dominated him. Buff Orpingtons are almost always sweeties! :love
ETA: As long as there is no blood, the hens shouldn't obsess over that spot, but when pinfeathers start growing back, watch to make sure no one tries to pluck them out. If it becomes an issue, you could get him an apron until the feathers cover the bald patch again.
