    Greetings! ^_^

Yes, I say peckered instead of pecked and go cheekin instead of chicken. [IMG] I'm from the south, we do that! [IMG]

Anyway, back to business. On rare occassion, I have a peckered hen, probably one every 14 months. In three years, I've had two that actually needed to be separated. One was about two weeks ago, and she had a small place on the back of her neck pecked through to the muscle. A flap of skin and feathers lifted off, and the muscley stuff turned grayish black within a few days. I expected the flap to wither and fall off, but it has yet to do that, and now this particular hen looks like she's a Polish with an identity crisis.

When I found her, the wound was bleeding a little. I have a charcoal blood clotting/antiseptic dust that I use for my livestock. Would this be safe for chickens? The brand is Farnum I think. I think. But is it safe for poultry?

And what other medications are safe for chickens?

    Thank you. ^_^

    Greetings and Welcome to BYC!

If you're talking about Wonder Dust, yes it is okay to put on chickens and I've used it numerous times with no problem. It's like Blu-Kote but in powder form and does help stop the bleeding after the wound has been cleaned.
I usually clean wounds by flushing with a mild diluted betadine solution and then applying either Wonder Dust or Blu-Kote if it's something that I think they'll pick at. They leave the wound alone when it's coated with either of these.

As for other medications used on chickens there's a thread on BYC that has a lot of great items to keep on hand to put in your cheeekins first aid box.

I know this is a bit off subject, well any way, not about the medicines.. But I had a button quail that was bleeding and I used flour to stop the bleeding..

I didnt have any of the other stuff handy..

I hope that was ok. I heard that it was..

If this is stealing your thread, please let me know and I will edit this.

    Oh and welcome to BYC...
