Two injured chickens

You can use saline in place of any wound spray or Vetericyn, and then follow with plain antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin or Polysporin. Keep the wound from drying into a hard scab. Warm water with 2 tsp of salt per quart of water (the same as saline) can also be used as a soak once a day if she gets soiled from droppings. Let us know how she gets along.

You sure that's the result of pecking? Looks more like what a dog would do, to my eyes.
After I got girls separated - I found what I think was raccoon poop in the coop. It doesn’t all make sense to me what may have happened. I have 2x4 welded wire over the top of the run. I found where parts of it had come loose - giving critters entry. I don’t think a dog could have gotten in the small opening. I did consider that something injured the girls - thereby causing pecking. I thought if it was mammal related they would have finished her off.

Parts had already turned hard before I got the Vetericyn. They didn’t seem to soften when I sprayed them down. I did go ahead and put antibiotic ointment on. Should I try soaking it longer tomorrow or wait until ointment is less visible?

Im following this thread too. My hen got attacked by a possum last night. She’s got deep wounds on her back, similar to your picture, but not black in color. She also has a significant gash under each wing. Her leg seems injured too. She’s having a hard time bearing weight on it and wobbling/falling when she tries to walk a few steps.
I hadn’t considered opossum. Definitely a possibility here too. I hope your girl heals….

Really sorry for your hen, too. If you need more help, feel free to start a thread with pics and we can jump over there, also. Hope your hen gets along okay.

The ointment might be enough to soften the scab as it sits, but soaking always helps soften scabs, too. Overtime it will soften up and slough off with both. The educators may have something better for you on softening the scab, though :)

Warm slightly soapy water for a soak for about 15-20 minutes can soften a scab. Keep the water warm, and make it just deep enough to soak her wound. Towel her dry or blow dry after. Keep ointment on the wound.
