pecking head feathers - please help

Great info and by the way my husband thinks the chickens get fed better than him LOL. Fresh fruits and veggies everyday for them. "Get it yourself" for him LOL.

The plywood I have over the top of the gate is about 50 pounds (10 feet long) so I am not worried about foxes, skunks, racoons getting in during the day. They come out after dusk anyways.

Once the other girls go into the coop (around 8:00pm these days) I brought the hurt one into the garage locked in the cat carrier for the night. Then this morning she went back out to her set up for the day. I have not been home yet today so I will have to check her when I get home but this morning the wound looked less red and not as swollen. I figure a few more days she should be back in with the group. Also, I was told to put her back into the coop at nighttime when the others are tucked in bed so when they wake up they will think it has all been a dream :)

I'm so happy to hear that she's on the mend !!! At this rate, she'll be up and running with her friends in no time. Great idea putting her in the garage at night. A few more days in the 'hospital' and she just might be ready for re-introductions. Hopefully, that will be that and she (and you) won't have to go through this again. My chickens enjoy a gourmet salad everyday too! They absolutely looovvee it !!! I think giving them all those fruits and vegies makes their eggs taste better! Sometimes when I think about how much time and energy I put into their care (not EVEN counting the money), I feel so 'fortunate' to be only paying $35.00 a dozen for their eggs...lol !!! No, in all seriousness, I can't imagine my backyard without them anymore. That's funny about your husband! I'm sure my partner has experienced the same, although I must say, she's awfully good natured about it! Have you decided to free-range them or ??? Keep us posted.
